Humane Society of Oldham County
Our Featured Pet...
Call and ask about our Camp Canine Program. Now in our 4rd year, the program has proved a win win for the dogs, the inmates and the families adopting the dogs. Oldham County, KY has its very own version of what many have seen on TV. HSOC pulls dogs primarily from kill shelters. We vet them, temperament test them and stage them to go into our local prison. Once admitted, the dogs live 24/7 with their handler and are worked twice a day. Under the guidance of an certified trainer from the outside, the dogs master the 10 commands of the Canine Good Citizen program. In addition, the inmates make sure the dogs are housebroken and crate trained. Of equal importance, the inmates gain insight on the dog's personality, their goods and bads. Upon adoption, and most are spoken for before they graduate, we schedule a visit to the prison where the inmate shares the dogs training cues, its favorite toy, its favorite treats. For the dogs, its a very hopeful second chance on life, for the inmates its a chance to experience the unconditional love of a dog, and for the adopting family its the chance to adopt a healtly, obedient, forever family companion.
Looking for just the right pet? Welcome to our site. Our animals are healthy (we quarantine all prior to adoption) and friendly (dogs are temperament tested) Best of intentions can turn into a nightmare if your new friend is sick or grumpy. We'd like to highlight our Camp Canine dogs. And what is Camp Canine? HSOC pulls dogs from kill shelters and places them in a local correctional facility for AKC Canine Good Citizen training. Twelve dogs live with twelve inmates for approximately 8 weeks. Its one on one for the dogs, and wonderful companionship for the inmates. Upon graduation, with the best of manners, dogs move into great forever homes. Matter of fact, most of the dogs are adopted pre graduation. So, if you're not in the market for all the work that goes with a puppy, we have some wonderful adult dogs!

Who We Are
HSOC is a no-kill organization. Our main mission is promoting spay/neuter to stop pet overpopulation at its source. To that end, we have low-cost spay/neuter clinics at least once a month, and work to educate area residents about the importance of getting their pets altered. We also pay to alter some of the animals from Oldham County Animal Control, in hopes they'll be more attractive for adoption. We've also altered feral cats brought in by concerned residents who don't want to see the colonies continue to grow. We have volunteers who take care of some of the feral colonies around the area. If you'd like more information about our Spay/Neuter program, feel free to contact us by email, mail, or phone.
Adopting a friend
We do not have a shelter or central location to take in animals. We rely exclusively on foster families. Check back with Petfinder or local publications for cats and dogs (or the occasional rabbit!) we have up for adoption We're always in need of reliable foster families, so if you don't want to commit to having a pet in the house for 20+ years but you'd like some temporary companionship, give us a call at 502-222-7537 or email us at email@example.com.
