The primary focus of Canine Connections
is to develop and enhance the partnership between a dog and his handler.
The services offered by this non-kennel
group are:
Rescuing
and Rehoming Non-aggressive dogs
Training
Obedience and Agility
Ongoing
support and assistance to new adoptive families
Our Rescue Operation is comprised of a few fanatical
friends who rescue dogs from local shelters and prepare the pet for adoption. Aside from working with rescue dogs and
working fulltime outside our homes, we are also involved in therapy dog work,
agility competitions and providing training classes, so please have patience
when you call or email us. We will
return your call/email, but it may not be an immediate response.
The reason we charge an adoption fee is so we can
continue with this work. We do not
“sell” dogs, nor do we let our dogs be adopted out to homes that have not be
scrutinized to establish the best possible home for the dog.
Our Preparation for Adoption phase for the average
dog goes as follows:
ü
Find the dog in
the shelter & do preliminary personality testing
ü
Rescue from the
shelter
ü
Take the dog to
our vet for vaccinations, health evaluation, heartworm testing, spay/neutering.
ü
Test for
aggressive tendencies (food aggression, toy aggression and aggression towards
people or other pets)
ü
Start basic training,
obedience, house manners, etc.
This process can take anywhere from a three month to
one year, depending on the health issues that need to be resolved prior to
adoption.
Once the dog is deemed “adoption ready”, our dogs are
listed for adoption.
ü
Applications are
accepted, telephone interview* and references checked.
ü
The Adoptee and
the Adopter Meet and spend some time getting to know each other.
ü
Assuming all has
gone well and the Adoption Fees are paid, the Dog goes home with the Adopter.
This process is usually about a week long
This time line is approximate and can take longer or
be shorter, depending on the distance travelled and the schedule of the foster
home involved and the adopter.

The other service we provide is on-going support to
the new family. Most of our adoptive
families have become good friends of ours and send us regular updates on the
new member of their family.
The way to start this process is to download our adoption contract and
email it back to us. You can also call
us to discuss the dog you are interested in. These dogs live with us, we can tell you what
he’s like, about his idiosyncrasies and help you decide if this pet is the best
choice for your new family member.
