About Us
The German Wirehaired Pointer is very affectionate, active and intelligent. A GWP is eager to learn and is loyal to its family. They need a handler who is consistent in their approach. They like to be occupied and enjoy working for their owner. They are friendly with those they know, but are naturally aloof with strangers. This is one breed of dog that does not do well in a kennel environment, German Wirehaired Pointers are happiest and most well behaved when they are part of the family and can spend time with their people. GWP's can be rather willful and they like to roam. Because they are a powerful and energetic breed they can become bored and hard to manage without proper exercise. Please see "About the Breed" for more information before considering a German Wirehaired Pointer! Thanks!
Our adoption fees vary, but we usually charge a fee of $200-$300 so we may continue our work and provide the best vetting possible to insure a happy healthy pet. Our adoptive parents are responsible for helping in the transportation of their adopted dog. We do have help from a network of transport groups and can help in certain areas.
Please see the requirements listed below. We require potential adopters to fill out an application, we check references and a home visit is done. We put the dogs welfare first.
Please email us for an application, fill it out and return it. Once reviewed we will call or e-mail to follow up with you. Also, please remember to be patient, we are volunteers and work other jobs, so we may take a day or two to respond to your inquiry.
Please feel free to sponsor a pet from our listings. It provides monthly heartworm treatment, vetting, spay/neuter, toys/bones and transportation to a foster home. It's a great way to support needy dogs if you cannot adopt one!
GWP Midwest Rescue is an independent rescue caring for GWP's in need. We are located in Kentucky but many of the dogs we rescue are from the surrounding Midwest states. We work with many different rescues, including GWP Rescue in Kansas, GSP Rescue of Kentucky and Ohio, New England Brittney Rescue and many others in addition to local shelters. We rescue, train and rehabilitate Wires in need. Please see our available dogs on Petfinder!! Thanks for visiting!
Here is a video of some of our dogs that we have fostered and adopted out - and yes, every dog that leaves brings tears to our whole family.
