GWP Rescue - Kentucky

GWP Rescue Kentucky

Welcome to the German Wirehaired Rescue of Kentucky!

GWP Rescue Kentucky is a branch of the GWP Rescue, Inc. which is a Non-Profit organization that was formed due to the rising number of GWP's and mixes being euthanized in shelters. Please take a look at our available dogs and the dogs listed on the GWP Rescue, Inc. website. Thanks for visiting!

The German Wirehaired Pointer is very affectionate, active and intelligent. A GWP is eager to learn and loyal to its family. They need a handler who is consistent in approach. They like to be occupied and enjoy working for their owner. They are friendly with those they know, but are naturally aloof with strangers. This is one breed of dog that does not do well in a kennel environment. German Wirehaired Pointers are happiest and most well behaved when they are part of the family and can spend time with their people. GWP's can be rather willful and they like to roam. Because they are a powerful and energetic breed they can become bored and hard to manage without enough exercise. Please see "About the Breed" for more information before considering a German Wirehaired Pointer! Thanks!

Our Featured Pet . . .

Puppy Mill Babies

These are just some of the puppies that were part of a puppy mill/BYB situation in MO. We have worked with local rescue agencies that contacted GWP Rescue, Inc and Midwest Paws for assistance. They were on their way to the shelter to be euthanized, but with the persistence of our rescue Angels, the truck was turned around. These puppies were in isolation because one of their litter mates died from Parvo. They are now healthy and some of them are being fostered in Kentucky and the rest of them are being fostered in Kansas. They will need experienced, loving homes! Please see our main website for Information on @ gwprescue.com.

Our adoption fees vary, but we usually charge an adoption fee of $250.00-$400.00 so we may continue our work and provide the best vetting possible to insure a happy healthy pet. Our adoptive parents are responsible for helping in the tranportation of their adopted dog. We do have help from transport groups and have established a network of transport help in certain areas.
Please feel free to sponsor a pet from our listings. It provides monthly heartworm treatment, vetting, spay/neuter, toys/bones and transportation to a foster home. It's a great way to support needy dogs if you cannot adopt one!

Please see the requirements listed below. We require an application first, then check references. A home visit is done, and we put the dogs welfare first.

We rely solely on donations....if you are a wire lover, then please make a donation. We are getting calls on adoptable wires from all over the country. This money goes directly to vet care, food, and transport to get them to safety. Just click on the icon below! Thanks so much in advance!

News

The GWP Rescue, Inc. is a Non-Profit group bound together in the interest of preserving the German Wirehaired Pointers in need. Our goal is to place the GWP's in need into loving homes. Rescues need a lot of TLC. They have usually been through a lot of bouncing around, and need time to adjust to their new environment.

We Require a secure fence, the dog must be inside with the family, crate training is necessary for the safety of the pet, and an application must be filled out before a home will be considered. Our goal is to secure forever homes that meet our criteria for the best care possible for our rescues. Nearly all wirehairs will not be safe to put with cats since they have a strong hunting drive. On occasion we may get a dog that is good with cats but it is rare. Please observe our symbols next to the dog, whether it be no kids, no cats, no other dogs, etc. Thanks!

Our group recognizes the special love these dogs have to offer.....and all are grateful for a chance to be rehomed.

We are in desperate need of foster homes. Please email Mary at GwpRescue@yahoo.com to find out more.

Who We Are

The German Wirehaired Pointer Rescue - Kentucky is a branch of the German Wirehaired Rescue, Inc. located in Olathe, KS. The German Wirehaired Pointer Rescue, Inc. is a group of volunteers and foster homes that work together coordinate our efforts into action! We have a website www.GWPRescue.com, and follow through with efforts to save them from certain euthanasia in most cases. We are not of unlimited resources, but do not wish to put a price on a needy wire's life. Please go to our website and make donation. Please see our website www.GwpRescue.com.

Adopting a friend

You must first email for an application and then fill out the application for one of our dogs. We will then review the application, and call or email the results to you. We do a home visit, vet reference check, and personal reference check. We do our best to fit the dog to the family or person adopting the dog. Wires are not couch potatos. They are fun loving, hike loving, field dogs that want and need a busy lifestyle. Some may hunt....many do not, and thus why they are in rescue. These dogs make very loving companions, running partners, family dogs, and wonderful life long buddies! Adoption fees are $250-400, and sometimes on a case by case basis. Our dogs live "inside the home" with our foster parents, and each is leash trained, crate trained, and fully vetted. Click here for an application.
