BUGS
BUGS is a boy with a question. Why did such a beautiful soul end up in such a funny looking body? This is one of our favorite dogs ever. He is submissive, gentle, loving, and fun. Because he isn't a good looking dog, no one looks at him. But oh the eyes and the tail tell his story. With a smile and a happy go lucky tail this fellow will steal your heart if given the chance. Any chance you can love a Labbie soul in a Basset body with a Great Dane head?

One of our Saturday pound volunteers has informed me that a few more of our Kuranda beds have worn out. We need at least 3 new beds. These incredible beds are a godsend and provide much needed comfort for the pound dogs to keep them off the concrete floor. Can you help?

HAPPY MESSAGE: November 9, 2009 - The members of STAR are happy to report that our beloved dog warden, Jimmy Hale, is back at work! We are so excited that he is back as he is the best dog warden ever and a vital part of the STAR team. The dog pound is smelling clean and fresh and new assistant Tiffany is a keeper! Rowan County is lucky to have such dedicated leadership in the local pound. *Remember if you call the dog pound the answering machine will take your message. However the dog pound CANNOT return long distance calls. So please be patient and call back.* Please adopt a dog and spay/neuter your pets.
The members of STAR do not wok at the dog pound. We are a small group of caring people who save pound dogs. Our goal is to get dogs out of the pound and to the safety of a rescue or a new home. Dogs that are at the pound are subject to walk-in adoptions that we cannot contol. Dogs are also subject to being euthanized if the pound gets over capacity (this is a weekly occurrence). If you want to adopt a dog the adoption fee will include vet/boarding costs. When we foster a dog for more than a few days, another dog at the pound could die because we have no where to put it. We will only pull dogs from the pound that have a place to go. Our web site email is not answered everyday -- please be patient. It may take up to 3 days to return your email.

Local groups are stepping up to help the cause: CiCis Pizza in the Kroger plaza has hosted 3 fundraisers for STAR; Fazoli's sponsored an ADOPTION DAY on November 7 and it was a huge success with several adoptions, Thanks FAZOLI'S!!!!; KROGERS is also a part of the STAR team! YEAH for Rowan County businesses.

Who We Are
STAR, Saving the Animals of Rowan is a 501c3 organization committed to improving the conditions for the abandoned dogs of Rowan County, KY. Our members work to find safe and loving homes for dogs that find themselves in the Rowan County Canine Shelter. STAR members are dedicated to reducing the number of dogs euthanized due to the overcrowded conditions of this rural shelter. We have a limited number of foster homes and we need more. Please consider providing a temporary home for a puppy or dog that is up for adoption.Rescue groups are most welcome however a reference check is required. Please contact us for additional information. Please do not ask us to hold dogs. We can help arrange transport.

Adopting a friend
Adopting a dog is a commitment. Dogs need fresh food, water, and safe environment, and you. No dog should ever be chained nor should it be expected to "know the rules." As a responsible pet owner we must help our new four-legged friend understand what good manners include. Before adopting a puppy or dog make sure that all family members are in agreement and will contribute to the care and training of your new family member. Dogs that are adopted at the pound will be given their first shot. The adoption fee ($50) includes a rabies vaccination and spay/neuter (required for all adoptions). If you adopt your dog through STAR the adoption cost is equal to the cost of the pound fee plus any veterinarian care required to provide you with a healthy pet. STAR adoptions are subject to approval via references and home visits.

STAR works with the Rowan County Canine Shelter but we are NOT the dog pound so check the site to see who is still at the pound! The Rowan County Canine Shelter is located on Bullfork Road, west of Morehead, KY off Route 60. The shelter hours are 3:00-6:00 pm on Monday - Wednesday; 10:00 am - 3:00 pm on Saturday, and 12:00 - 3:00 pm on Sunday.You may also call the Dog Warden at 606-784-4930 for additional information and directions.
