Any donations not needed for a specific dog or specific expense are applied to our general fund & used wherever needed. Most of our money goes toward vetting, supplies, boarding & transports. | Who We Are |
STAR, Saving the Animals of Rowan is a 501c3 organization committed to improving the conditions for the abandoned dogs of Rowan County, KY. Our few members work to find safe and loving homes or rescues for dogs that find themselves in the Rowan County Dog Pound. STAR members are dedicated to reducing the number of dogs euthanized due to the overcrowded conditions of this rural shelter.
STAR is not the dog pound. We are a VERY small group of caring people who save pound dogs. Our goal is to get dogs out of the pound and to the safety of a rescue or a new home. We can only help dogs outside the pound when space and funds are available. If you are local you can either give STAR a few weeks to work on placement for your dog or you can take your dog to the pound. We do NOT have a facility and we do NOT have nearly enough foster homes. We work solely on donations. Our STAR email is not answered everyday, please be patient. It may take up to 3 days to return emails. |

| Foster & Save Lives | Please consider providing a temporary home for a puppy or dog that is up for adoption. Send us an email if you have a safe place to foster a dog for a week or two...or longer. Fostering is one of the most rewarding things you can do in rescue! Watching these dogs blossom after getting out of the shelter is just so amazing! | |
| STAR Meetings | Our next meeting will be on Tuesday, April 9 at 6:00 pm Location: Rowan Public Library, 175 Beacon Hill Dr, Morehead (conference room) Come on out! It's a good way to meet STAR volunteers and get an idea of what we do! STAR membership meetings are held the 2nd Tuesday of the month, probably every month during the spring and summer. |

| Rescues Welcome! | We are also in need of good rescues that can commit to Rowan dogs on a regular basis. We can help arrange transport. The Rowan County Dog Pound is always full! We need immediate assistance but please do not ask us to hold them for you as we have no foster space and are currently boarding dogs. Email us if you can help. Sponsoring a dog can help increase it's chance at getting selected by rescue. Average cost to fully sponosor/fully vet/health cert a dog is $120. Chip in for our spay/neuter fund! This fund provides spay/neuter assistance to low income families in our area.  |

| Adopting a Friend | Adopting a dog is a commitment. Dogs need fresh food, water, a safe environment, and you. No dog should ever be chained nor should it be expected to "know the rules." As a responsible pet owner we must help our new four-legged friend understand what good manners include. Before adopting a puppy or dog make sure that all family members are in agreement and will contribute to the care and training of your new family member. STAR adoptions are subject to approval via references and home visits. Email us to inquire. | |
| Rehoming a Pet | Rehoming a dog through STAR: It typically takes three or more weeks for space to open up for STAR to intake owner surrender dogs. If you can't keep your dog that long, please take them to the Rowan County Dog Pound and we can assess them at the pound. If you can hold onto your dog for as long as it takes for space to open up, please contact us and request an owner surrender questionnaire. Please note: We do not take dogs with aggression issues. STAR is no longer doing courtesy listings for dogs still with their families. | |
| Lost a Pet? | If you've lost a dog, please call the pound at 606-784-4930 to let them know. You can also join our Facebook group and post photos of lost dogs or cats to our online community and ask your neighbors to keep an eye out for your missing pet. We have found that networking on Facebook seems to work better for getting the word out than courtesy listing the missing pets on our site. You can also post missing pet flyers around your neighborhood, at the vet's, even give them to the post office and ask them to hand them out to the mail carriers. Ask the pound to post them too. On the flyer, include a photo of your pet, the date your pet went missing, town & intersection where the pet was last sighted, and your phone number. | |
| Come Visit Us | STAR works with the Rowan County Canine Shelter but we are NOT the dog pound so check the site to see who is still at the pound! Meeting with our foster dogs are by appointment only. Responsible pet owners are welcome. Please do not condemn your dog to a life on a chain. Chaining a dog 24/7 is cruel. | |
| About the Pound | Dogs that are adopted from the pound will be given their first shot. The adoption fee for local walk-in residents is $50 (for people who walk into the pound and adopt directly from there), which includes a rabies vaccination and spay/neuter (required for all adoptions). Dogs from our pet list that are still at the pound will have a (P) next to their name. Remember if you call the Rowan County Dog Pound the answering machine will take a message. However the dog pound CANNOT return long distance calls. So please be patient and call them back. STAR does not answer the phone at the pound. Please adopt a dog and spay/neuter your pets. The Rowan County Canine Shelter is located at 304 Bullfork Road, Morehead, KY off Route 60. New hours are Monday to Thursday from 9am to 3pm and Saturday 10am to 3pm. The Shelter is closed on Friday and Sunday. You may also call the Dog Warden at 606-784-4930 for additional information and directions. |
