ALL Animals for Adoption!

Pet of the Month ~ Max ~ PLEASE HELP US! ~

Max's surgery cost us $190.00 and we need to raise money to pay for this. He had a infection drainage tract all the way down to his kidney and had to be opened up surgically and drained and poor Max is left with a 4 inch incision and having to wear a collar to keep him from messing with the stitches. If you can help us with his vet costs, even 5-10 dollars helps us greatly, thank you!
Max is a rambunctious 10 month old kitty that was returned to us after his adoption because they said he "attacked" the kids. What we found out is Max had a spot on his side that swelled like an abscess and burst It appeared to the vet to be a bite and had a hair or something that had embedded itself in his skin and festered. His owners didn't notice this when it started and when the kids grabbed him he reacted. He just had surgery to clean out the wound and is ready to get back to his old playing self. He is very interactive, so small children may not be the best choice but he is a wonderful boy looking for a family to love him forever ...

The Simpson County Animal Shelter is open for adoptions Wednesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. (closed for lunch from 12:00 to 1:00pm).

Who We Are

Friends of the Shelter has a contract with Simpson County to handle all adoptions and rescues of animals from the Simpson County Animal Shelter. Our group does NOT take in animals. We work strictly with the Simpson County Shelter to find homes and rescue for the animals brought to the shelter. The Simpson County Shelter only takes in animals from residents of Simpson County and/or the City of Franklin, KY. Friends has one paid employee to work as shelter personnel at the Simpson County Animal Shelter on Wednesday through Saturday from 10 AM - 5 PM closed for lunch from 12:00-1:00pm Central time.

Our shelter is a very small one. We have 18 cages for cats which hold about one cat per cage and we have 16 dog runs which are about 2 feet wide and 4 feet long with a guillotine door that opens out into another 2 foot by 4 foot run that is "outside" but still on concrete. We can only hold 16 adult dogs and honestly the biggest dogs do not fit into those 2x4 kennels so we do have 2 decent and 2 barely servicable 10x10 dog pens outside in back of our shelter sitting on a concrete pad. Some of these have covers over the top, some don't but we try not to use these in extreme weather due to water freezing and the cold temps and rain, or hot temps. So when you look at our site and notice a few dogs, please remember that we only have room for 16 basically, and so we fill up quickly and have to make decisions based on room more so than larger shelters might.

So come by and help socialize some puppies, walk some dogs, adopt your next best friend or help give our kitty cats some TLC!

We are a very small all-volunteer NON-PROFIT organization (501c3) and we survive soley on the basis of donations from caring people who want to help us help the animals at our community shelter. Our new shelter as we like to call it, was opened in July 2005 and we are always in need of monetary and product donations. All donations are tax deductible and receipts are given upon request, as we are a non-profit 501c3 organization.

We are working with The Fix Foundation (another 501c3) to bring a low cost spay/neuter clinic to our community. We are currently raising money to help build a small building. All donations are tax deductible. It is our goal to help keep our shelter population low with an aggressive spay/neuter program, help the community and work with other rescue groups.

We need your help to make this a successful shelter. Volunteers are always needed for many jobs. Foster homes are always needed, walking dogs, playing with cats, and fundraising events are all areas where help is needed. If you are interested, please email: friendsofshelter@yahoo.com or call 270-776-2507. And please remember that you can make a difference by SPAYING AND NEUTERING YOUR PETS!

ADOPTION INFORMATION

All pets will be spayed or neutered before going home! Our adoption fees are $75.00 for dogs/puppies and $60.00 for kittens and $50.00 for adult cats. This covers the spay or neuter surgery, first set of shots, deworming and rabies vaccination.

The first step towards adopting is an application which is required. For those living in rental dwellings we will contact your landlord to make sure they accept pets as we would hate to have that pet end up brought back or worse kicked out in the streets because the landlord found out. We would prefer that all of our dogs go to homes that have fenced yards but if that is not possible then an indoor home where the dog is taken out for many walks during the day is also just fine. We welcome out of state adopters; however, we do not arrange transport for adopted animals nor do we ship our animals at this time. If you live out of state and are interested in one of our pets we urge you to try and find a loving pet closer to home OR if you plan to drive here to pick up your pet then go ahead and ask for an application and we will be more than happy to work with you. We just do not have the resources both financially and personnel wise to be able to facilitate long distance transports and/or shipping our animals.
