The O'Connor Animal Shelter is a non-profit organization operated by one Animal Control Officer under the direction of the Concordia Police Department. Animal Control works under general supervision, to investigate complaints, capture and impound stray, vicious, or injured animals; to enforce ordinances governing licensing, impounding, humane treatment, sanitation and disposal of animals; to assist in cleaning the shelter, feeding and only using euthanasia for animals with major aggression and seriously injured; and to do related work as required.


THE O'CONNOR ANIMAL SHELTER IS CURRENTLY UNDER CONSTRUCTION AND HAS BEEN SINCE OCTOBER. WE ARE ALMOST DONE AND LOOKING FORWARD TO RE-OPENING AFTER THE FIRST OF THE YEAR. WE WILL ALSO BE HAVING AND OPEN HOUSE AND INVITE THE COMMUNITY TO ATTEND. PLEASE, KEEP WATCHING FOR MORE INFORMATION.

ANIMAL CONTROL ONLY SERVICES THE CITY OF CONCORDIA AND DOES NOT TAKE OWNER TURN-INS. IF YOU HAVE A PET YOU WOULD LIKE TO RE-HOME, PLEASE CONSIDER MAKING FLYERS TO POST AT THE VET CLINICS AND LOCAL BUSINESSES. RADIO AND NEWSPAPER ADS ALSO WORK WELL. THERE ARE ALSO RESCUE GROUPS THAT MAY BE ABLE TO HELP YOU PLACE YOUR ANIMAL, IN WHICH CAN BE FOUND SEARCHING PETFINDER OR SEARCH ENGINES FOR BREED SPECIFIC OR MIX BREED SITES.

CONCORDIA RESIDENTS ONLY A current certificate of rabies immunization is a prerequisite for purchasing city tags for your dog. All licensed veterinarians certificates are recognized. Please contact City Hall for more questions and information at 785-243-2670.

ADOPTION FEES - PLEASE READ CAREFULLY - **UPDATE**UPDATE** STARTING AFTER JANUARY 1ST, 2012** THE ADOPTION FEES WILL BE RAISED TO HELP COVER THE COST OF SERVICES PROVIDED TO THE ANIMAL. PLEASE KEEP WATCHING FOR THE FEE CHANGES.

$150.00 for a Un-Altered Dog
- includes a basic wellness check from our veterinarian, vaccinations, de-worming, spay/neuter, rabies and heart worm testing for dogs only, and a city tag for your dog if applicable

$75.00 for a Un-Altered Cat
- includes a basic wellness check from our veterinarian, vaccinations, de-worming, rabies vaccination, spay/neuter.

If you feel you are a match with one of our animals and commit to the adoption, you must pay the adoption fee in full. We will then schedule the spay/neuter appointment with our local vet, transport the animal, and you will be notified when the animal is ready for pickup from the vet. If the basic check includes additional recommendations of treatment, it will be your responsibility to cover the charges if you so choose to have additional treatments done. If your new pet is not of age for a spay/neuter, your application will be dated in which the animal must altered by. If you live out of town and want to bring the animal back for the spay/neuter, you may make arrangements with us for an appointment with our local veterinarian. If you do not want to make arrangements with us for the alter, you will be responsible for the additional costs of a spay/neuter with your own veterinarian. The adoption fee does not change in either circumstance. A citation may be issued if you are not compliance with the spay/neuter statute by the date listed on your application.


Listed below is the Kansas Statute:

Kansas Statue 47-1731, Chapter 47, Article 17 - Pet Animal Act - Dogs and Cats, spaying and neutering required when (a) No dog or cat may be transferred to the permanent custody of a prospective owner by a pound or animal shelter, as defined by K.S.A. 47-1701 and amendments thereto, or by a humane society, unless: (1) such dog or cat has been surgically spayed or neutered before the physical transfer of the animal occurs.
>We do not place "holds" on any animals. We are a first come first serve facility. The animal you select will go home with you the same day you adopt if already altered. Please bring at least a leash with you for a dog, or a pet taxi for a cat as we do not furnish either.

VOLUNTEER INFORMATION
The Concordia Police Department-Animal Control Division is now accepting volunteer applications. "Shelter Helper" positions require a background check as well as finger prints. These positions do not include wages or benefits, other than the satisfaction of helping those in need, the animals. There are risks involved when working with animals and workman's comp will not cover Shelter Helpers.

The Shelter Helper positions are to assist the animals in walking on a leash, socialization with other animals in a safe manor, and simple commands. Duties will also include, but not limited to cleaning, feeding, taking pictures and video of the animals for websites, assist with fund raisers, search for and write grants, light maintenance, and other general duties.

FOSTER HOMES
We are also accepting fostering applications. You must be a volunteer and pay the $10.00 fee for a foster license, which is renewable on a yearly basis.

If you would like an application for the volunteer Shelter Helper Program or the Foster Program, please stop by the Concordia Police Department and pick one up.

DONATIONS
The Concordia Animal Shelter is now accepting donations. Please make your donation at the Police Department or call 785-243-3131 to schedule a meet time with Animal Control at the shelter. Items in need are:
Towels/Wash Cloths
Paper Towels - most needed
Bleach - most needed
Dish Soap
Clay Kitty Litter
Kong Chew Toys
Canned Dog and Cat Food
Leashes/Collars - all sizes
Pet Taxis - all sizes
Exercise Pens (X-Pens) - all sizes
Flea and Tick Applications - dogs all weights and ages
Live Traps - enclosed Skunk boxes
Cash or check donations for medical treatment and animal care are always welcomed as well as making improvements to the shelter. At this time, we are working to fund the installation of a washer and dryer as well as an outside kennel awning or individual tarp kits for the protection of the elements when the dogs are outside.



Donate a Bed
Our dogs and cats love to sleep on Kuranda beds, but we don't have enough for everyone. If you would like to donate a bed at a special wholesale price for a another dog or cat to sleep in comfort, please donate a Kuranda bed.
