Thank you for
visiting our site!
If you are interested in an animal you see on our pet list, please
e mail us at bmccboren@sbcglobal.com, or call the shelter at 620-662-6981 to check the status
of that animal, we will respond to your inquiry as quickly as possible.
The animals at our shelter are brought in by animal
control, found by city residents, or surrendered by owners. All
animals are held three working days, and then are eligible for adoption. Most of the dogs and cats that spend time
with us have been neglected or mistreated in their lives.
Some have
lived their entire life outdoors, deprived of the warmth and comfort of a home. Others have been abused, some have never been groomed or recieved vet care, and in the worst cases they have been physically abused or starved. Some of our animals are turned in by owners that are tired of they way they shed, or bark, or sometimes even the way they look. Some owners surrender their animals because they are moving away or a family member is sick. All animals all deserve a second chance and most of them are extremely forgiving and go on to be wonderful companions. In all cases we try to learn as much as we can about the animals and post what we know here on petfinder. If you adopt an animal from us you must be
willing to provide them with proper care for the rest of their lives, this
includes vet care. It is a requirement
that all dogs and cats adopted from us be spayed or neutered, we will not adopt
an animal to you in you intend to breed it.
We must be
responsible and control the pet population!
Irresponsibility
is why a lot of the animals are with us.
Some of our
dogs are lucky enough to be placed in a new program that we have at our
shelter, the Lucky Dog Program.
The dogs in the Lucky Dog Program live at the
Hutchinson Correctional Facility. One
dog is assigned to live with a team of three inmates, who share responsibility
for the dog. In the program they learn
basic obedience, are housebroken, and are socialized with other dogs. The dogs in this program are
spayed/neutered, have received all shots (including rabies and bordatella), and are parasite
and heartworm free. Lucky Dogs spend
anywhere from six weeks to six months in the program before being “paroled” to
their adoption family. This program is
good both for the dogs and the inmates, and frees up much needed space in our
shelter. The dogs on our site in this
program will have Lucky Dog written in the ID section, and it will be in the individual
description as well. If you are interested
in one of our Lucky Dogs you can submit an application, you can do this at
our shelter facility or we can forward you an application via e mail.
If there is more
than one adoptive family interested in a Lucky Dog our committee will determine
which home is the best suitable for placement.
| We use Patented Kuranda Dog Beds because they are durable, chew proof and easy to clean. If you would like to donate a bed to us, click here. |
We try to keep
all the other unwanted, lost, or abandoned animals for as long as possible. Unfortunately, it is inevitable that some
will lose their lives waiting for new homes.
Please do not call or e mail us with negatives comments. We all hope for a happy
ending for each of these animals, a forever home that is safe and warm and filled with
love, reminding us that we are not always successful does not help anyone. We will continue to strive for
that happy ending with all of our animals. Spreading the word about Petfinder.com and the animals you will see here is a wonderful way to help. If you don't see a match with us please visit the other sites, there are thousands of animals waiting in shelters and rescues. We try to update our site weekly, so come back and visit us often!
If you are interested in adopting a pet from
our shelter there is a short application to fill out, and a requirement of a
fenced-in yard.
We also require a spay/neuter deposit on all un-altered animals, this deposit will be returned to you once you have shown proof of the completed procedure. The adoption fee also includes the animals first shots and worming, and a pet well check at one of the local veterinarians listed on our adoption certificate. We do accept out-of-town and out-of-state adopters, but request that a vet reference be provided for our records. Please take into consideration the time and effort involved in owning an animal. Our animals have been through enough in their lives and adoptive families must be prepared to make a lifetime committment to their new pet and be patient through the animals transition period.
We are also open to transfers to other shelters and rescue groups. If you are a rescue group or shelter and interested in one of our pets please contact us via e mail, we have very few employees and volunteers and can better answer your questions and requests through e mail.
