News

The new shelter is finished and the animals have moved in. Life is better in the new shelter, there is room for more animals which means more time as well. The inside of the runs is much nicer too, well lit, heated and NO MORE MICE! There is also a nice fenced area so visitors can take a dog out of the kennel and spend a little time getting aquainted or help decide on an adoption.

WISH LIST

There is always an ongoing need for items at the shelter. If you would like to donate any of these items to help with maintaining the animals in the shelter, please contact the ACO, or email for details.
* Dog food, canned or dry
* Paper towels and/or rags
* Bleach
* Chest type deep freezer
* Leashes, collars, rawhide chews and other tough, chew toys
* Volunteers to help with chores and spend time with the animals
**AND MOST OF ALL we need foster homes for small dogs, kittens and puppies or other animals that cannot or should not be held in the shelter facility. If you are willing to be a foster home for an animal in need, email or contact the ACO.

Who We Are

We are a small, city animal impoundment facility, established to deal with homeless, abused or surrendered animals in Norton. The new shelter is a big improvement with 10 dog runs instead of the 6 in the old shelter. We now also have cat facilities for a limited number of cats and kittens.

In the last three years, big changes have occurred at NCDP, thanks largely to the ACO who works hard to make the facility less an impoundment facility and more an "animal shelter". A new shelter has now been built, allowing for sheltering more animals and longer stays. Sherry continues working to find homes for as many of the animals as possible. Despite these positive changes, we are not able to function as a "no kill" facility but each animal is given as much time as space permits to find a home and avoid euthanasia.

Unfortunately, the harsh reality is that thousands of healthy, friendly, loving pets are put to death every day in shelters across the country. Pet overpopulation is a serious problem. Don't assume those cute puppies you let your dog have will find happy homes. Chances are good that at least one of them will be put to death in a shelter.
PLEASE, spay or neuter your pets. Save a life!

Adopting a friend

Dogs picked up as strays are held for 10 days. If not reclaimed in that time they are available for adoption. Under Kansas law, all dog and cats adopted from shelters/pounds must be spayed or neutered when adopted or within 30 days after adoption. When adopting a pet from the Norton City Dog Pound, a fee of $45 is assessed. Upon providing verification that the animal has been altered, $25 of that will be refunded to the adoptor. Another $15 of that cost will be refunded upon proof that the dog has received a rabies shot. If the dog is adopted within the city, a city dog license is free with proof of rabies vaccination.

Come Visit Us!

The new shelter is located southeast of the city of Norton. To find us, from State Street on the south side of Norton, take Washington Street east to Archer street, take Archer south, under the railroad underpass and past the skate park. The road to the shelter is 3/4 mile east of the bridge, to the north. You will be able to see the shelter from the paved road, follow the gravel road to the parking lot out front of the shelter. You may walk into the fenced area in order to see the dogs in the kennels. We do not currently have set hours of operation as the ACO is a part-time job but if you call and leave a message Sherry will call you back and schedule a time for you to get aquainted with a dog or complete an adoption.
