Our Featured Pet... "Stevie Wonder"click photo for more details.
UPDATE: Stevie is on a trial adoption that is going well so we are sure that he has found his forever home. This is our new friend Stevie Wonder. He is completely blind. Stevie is a Shih Tsu, young adult. He came to the shelter as a stray and was never reclaimed. We know why he was abandoned. Upon arrival at the shelter he had a severe eye problem resulting from a scratched cornea. (This is not unusual in the bulging eyed breeds) His eye was bulging and infected and by the next morning had ruptured. His other eye appears to be congenitally malformed and does not have any vision either.
He received veterinary care and the eye was removed. He feels so much better now as that was a very painful condition. It is so unfair that he was abandoned when he was in such great need...and this condition could have been remedied if treated earlier. >
This little guy will make a fantastic pet...he has such a happy, cheerful nature and he just wants to be around you and be loved...he will return that love in multiples, especially if you let him sleep in the bed with you!
We have started a "Stevie" fund to help cover his veterinary bills. If you wish to contribute in his name, please mail your check to LAWS, P.O. Box 498, Leavenworth, KS 66048. Contributions we receive will enable us to help other dogs or cats with serious needs in the future. We thank you so very much.

Leavenworth Animal Welfare Society (LAWS) is a non-profit group working in Leavenworth County to help companion animals. One of our programs is S.A.F.E. (Saving Animals From Euthanasia). We do not have our own facility but instead promote rescued and foster animals for adoption. We are licensed by the State of Kansas as an animal shelter (without a facility). Our animals are nurtured and cared for in state licensed foster homes.
Our main programs are;
1) spay/neuter promotion and financial assistance
2) Education in the public schools
3) foster care, rehabilitation and placement through adoption into quality homes of animals who have been abandoned or given up by owners. Most of these animals have been saved from euthanasia at Leavenworth Animal Control
4) networking and political action for causes that prevent animal abuse or benefit pet animals
5) Volunteer work at Leavenworth Animal Control
Application must be made to adopt one of our foster pets and a home visit and check of vet. references will be made before releasing a pet to you. If you are interested in one of our pets, please e-mail us for an application. Please note: because we sometimes have several applications for the same pet, our approach is to consider what would be the best placement for this particular pet...then, other things being equal, we will select the earliest application if the home visit proves satisfactory.
Foster animals come to you good to go for a year usually...unless noted otherwise in their description. They are sterilized (except young pups and kittens), vet checked, healthy and vaccinated. Dogs are treated for intestinal parasites & HW tested and on HW and flea preventive. Cats are tested for FeLeuk and FIV and treated for intestinal parasites and treated with flea preventive. There is an adoption fee of $125 for dogs and $90 for cats to reimburse for expenses. Note: (on un-sterilized animals this includes a $50 refundable spay/neuter bond). Adoption fee for unsterilized pups is $40 plus a $50 spay/neuter bond that will be refunded after proof of sterilization is provided. Kittens are $40 plus a $50 spay/neuter bond
Please Note: We are cautious about adopting young puppies to families with children under the age six. We will not adopt kittens to families with children under the age of six. We require that you will not have a cat declawed.
PLEASE NOTE: THERE ARE ALSO MANY WONDERFUL ANIMALS AVAILABLE AT THE CITY OF LEAVENWORTH ANIMAL CONTROL. Their web page address is: http://www.lv.petfinder.com .
To learn about City of Leavenworth shelter animals, please contact the Animal Control shelter directly @ 913-682-0268 or visit them @ 1720 S. 2nd St. Leavenworth
Sterilization is mandatory within 30 days or by age 7 months. Rabies vaccination and city tags are mandatory for Leavenworth residents within 30 days. Adoption fee is $105 ($85 of which is a spay bond refunded after proof of sterilization is provided). If an animal is already sterilized, the adoption fee is only $20. Shelter adopted pets also are eligible for a rebate from Laws of $25 for dogs and $20 for cats after sterilization is done.
Stevie has managed beautifully and his blindness does not slow him down at all.
He runs around the house freely and has learned where things are. He enjoys being outdoors and plays with the larger dogs in his foster home. (see his regular listing for info from his foster Mom)
