Our Featured Pet... "Sunnyt"click photo for more details.
"I was abandoned by my owners a few months ago...I don't know why. I am a very good dog and try so hard to please. After that I was adopted from animal control on Oct 9th but it did not turn out to be a good thing for me. That night somehow a lot of bad things happened to me. The very next morning I was found .outside the shelter shaking, afraid and badly injured. I had facial cuts (bites?) mouth injuries and a badly broken leg. No one involved had any explanation for what happened to me. I was taken to the vet immediately and started to receive treatment for my injuries...
Life is finally good now. I was rescued by Leavenworth Animal Welfare Society volunteers and placed in a wonderful, warm, loving foster home. My foster mom, Del, helped me write my story...my leg has been repaired with a plate and I need to wear a cast for 3 mos."
Sunny is truly a ray of sunshine. He is housetrained, knows "heel", "sit" and "stay" and is kennel trained. He is a real snuggler with a sweet disposition in spite of all that he has been through.
Sunny's medical expenses so far are $1200 and we are asking for donations in order to enable us to take care of the next "Sunny" who comes along...sadly we know there will be one. Donations may be sent to LAWS, P.O. Box 498, Leavenworth, KS 66048 Thank you very much for your generosity.

Leavenworth Animal Welfare Society (LAWS) is a non-profit group working in Leavenworth County to help companion animals. One of our programs is S.A.F.E. (Saving Animals From Euthanasia). We do not have our own facility but instead promote rescued and foster animals for adoption. We are licensed by the State of Kansas as an animal shelter (without a facility). Our animals are nurtured and cared for in state licensed foster homes.
Our main programs are;
1) spay/neuter promotion and financial assistance
2) Education in the public schools
3) foster care, rehabilitation and placement through adoption into quality homes of animals who have been abandoned or given up by owners. Most of these animals have been saved from euthanasia at Leavenworth Animal Control
4) networking and political action for causes that prevent animal abuse or benefit pet animals
5) Volunteer work at Leavenworth Animal Control
Application must be made to adopt one of our foster pets and a home visit and check of vet. references will be made before releasing a pet to you. If you are interested in one of our pets, please e-mail us at adivine@kc.rr.com for an application. Please note: because we sometimes have several applications for the same pet, our approach is to consider what would be the best placement for this particular pet...then, other things being equal, we will select the earliest application if the home visit proves satisfactory.
Foster animals come to you good to go for a year usually...unless noted otherwise in their description. They are sterilized (except for very young pups and kittens), vet checked, healthy and vaccinated. Dogs are treated for intestinal parasites & HW tested and on HW and flea preventive. Cats are tested for FeLeuk and FIV and treated for intestinal parasites and treated with flea preventive. There is an adoption fee of $125 for dogs and $90 for cats to reimburse for expenses. Note: (on un-sterilized animals this includes a $50 refundable spay/neuter bond). Adoption fee for unsterilized pupsand kittens is $40 plus a $50 spay/neuter bond that will be refunded after proof of sterilization is provided.
Please Note: We are cautious about adopting young puppies to families with children under the age six. We will not adopt kittens to families with children under the age of six. We require that you will not have a cat declawed.
