Who We Are

The Ford County Humane Society was started in 1993 by a group of concerned individuals to improve conditions for homeless pets in the Ford County area. Our organization is a no-kill facility for homeless pets. In our community, we have successfully avoided the unnecessary euthanization of countless animals. We also have educated residents on proper animal care & offer low-cost spay & neuter clinics two times a year with an average of 250 pets per event treated. We are an all-volunteer based organization currently with 150 members. If you are interested in becoming a member, please email fordcohs@yahoo.com. The Ford County Humane Society and its foster homes are licensed by the State of Kansas Animal Health Department. We are a non-profit 501(c)(3) agency. We rely on the in-kind financial support of our community to provide programs & services to Dodge City and all of Ford County as we receive no funding from national or state organizations. Through the generosity of our supporters, we have successfully placed more than 500 pets in the last year alone. All donations to our organization are tax deductible to the full extent of the law. If you are interested in making a donation, please contact 620.225.1481 or send to P.O. Box 1581, Dodge City, KS 67801. We open our doors to hundreds of animals each year, providing shelter, medical care, and socialization to displaced pets. Since our inception we have found homes for over 5,000 pets and have assisted in the cost of spaying and neutering thousands of animals in our area. This is all made possible by the generosity of our volunteers and donors who give their time and money to help homeless animals in our community.

Mission

We strive to prevent cruelty to animals, advance their welfare and protection in our community, and encourage the relationship between people and animals. We hope that in doing this, we can improve the quality of life for both.

Programs

We are committed to reducing the number of homeless pets in our community. Apart from educating pet owners about the importance of spay & neutering, The Ford County Humane Society offers low-cost spay and neuter certificates to pet owners in our area to help reduce the cost of spaying and neutering their pets. Persons interested in this program can call 620.225.1481 or come by any Saturday Adopt-A-Pet to pick up an application for a low-cost spay/neuter certificate(s).

Adopting a Friend

All potential pet owners must fill out an adoption application. We require references such as your landlord if you rent your home and we prefer references from your veterinarian. We will adopt out of state but do not ship our pets. Arrangements with approved out of state homes will be made to get the pet to them. We want you and your potential pet to meet each other "in person" before any placements are final. If you are interested in becoming a pet owner, you may request an adoption application by emailing fordcohs@yahoo.com or pick up an application on-site at Adopt-a-Pet on Saturday mornings. Our pets are all current on their vaccinations and dewormed. Dogs are heartworm tested and started on Prevention™. Cats are Feline Leukemia tested. All of our pets are spayed/neutered before they are placed in a home. If the animal is too young for surgery, there is a refundable spay/neuter deposit in addition to the adoption fee. Dogs that will be living within the city limits of Dodge City must have a city license tag, there is a $5 fee for the tag. The adoption fee includes spay/neuter and current vaccinations on cats & dogs. Purebred dogs will have a $100 adoption fee* Mixed breed dogs will have a $70 adoption fee* Cats will have a $65 adoption fee *Some owner surrender or purebred dogs may have a different adoption fee depending upon the circumstances.

How You Can Help

Over the last 16 years, we have built up our organization from a small collection of volunteers that fostered dogs in their homes into a network of foster families with a recently acquired shelter facility. With the addition of our shelter we have successfully saved countless animals from the local shelters & from needless deaths. Our goal is to continue expanding our work. This includes networking with neighboring states and animal rescue organizations to transport pets to out-of-state homes as well as expanding our building so we can house more pets. You can help us achieve our goals! The Ford County Humane Society is always in need of volunteers. Here is a list of some ways you can make a difference: Transport Volunteer: Become a part of our growing transport network! We currently are working with several rescue organizations to place pets in out of state homes. Volunteer your time transporting pets to their new homes! Foster Home: Join our extensive foster home family! Fostering a displaced pet gives us invaluable insight into personality and gives the pet an opportunity for socialization. Adoption Volunteer: Our Adopt-a-Pet Program runs every Saturday. Volunteers are needed to help with set up & tear down. Special Events Volunteer: Help FCHS fundraise! Throughout the year FCHS has many fundraising opportunities. Volunteer your time to help work these events! The Ford County Humane Society depends on the generosity and support of individuals and businesses in our community. Apart from monetary funds, in-kind donations are just as important. Currently The Ford County Humane Society is in need of: Purina One™ Dog Food Blankets Towels Cleaning Supplies Dog Beds Dog Porters Dog Toys Garden Hose Window Air Conditioning Units Storage Shed If you are a pet owner that uses Purina One™ Dog Food, please send us your Purina Weight Circles off the bags of food.
