Who We Are
Hello! We are the McPherson County Humane Society located in McPherson, Kansas. In our shelter we have cats up for adoption and our dogs are in foster care situations. Many people are not aware that there are two shelters in McPherson. The city shelter, shelter is part of local animal control, and serves public health and safety concerns as a utilitarian service for humans. The Humane Society receives no financial help from the city or the county.
The McPherson County Humane Society is faced with an overwhelming call for help from the local community. We do all that we can with limited financial resources. When our shelter is at capacity, animals are placed on a waiting list. We take in dogs, cats, and other small animals. Dogs go into foster care situations: if you see a dog or cat that you are interested in on Petfinder.com then we will assist you in having a meeting with the foster parent and the animal. Almost all cats up for adoption can be viewed at the shelter location unless they are being fostered. We provide services for local people as well: if you are in need of finding a home for a current pet and we are at capacity then we will be more then happy to place a photo that you send to us via e-mail onto Petfinder.com and we will help you get the animal adopted while it stays at your home. Please call ahead of time or e-mail if you are needing us to help you with an assisted placement. Please do not bring animals to the shelter unannounced. We have “Pet of the Week” also featured in our local newspapers and photos of animals up for adoption that can be found around McPherson. We use rescue groups when necessary, in an effort to help our animals get adopted. We are currently the only shelter in McPherson for cats.
Often people are interested in how long we keep animals that come to the shelter. The answer is as long as it takes to get them adopted. We will not euthanize healthy, adoptable animals. We have found loving new homes for all kinds of animals including elderly dogs and cats with physical limitations, animals that have been abused and many other animal situations. We also investigate countless abuse cases that occur within the city and county. We are always looking for volunteers for all the areas of current need: 1) volunteer work for the shelter 2) volunteers for fostering animals 3) volunteers for investigating abuse cases 4) volunteers to help with fundraising 5) volunteers who would be interested in helping with adoption days and other humane society events. We also would like to thank the many local businesses, organizations, and private individuals who have and do donate time and supplies to help us in all we do.
If you are interested in adopting from us here is some important information:
Our hours are Thursday - Friday 2:00 - 5:00 and Saturday 1:00 - 5:00. Our adoption fees include spaying and/or neutering of all animals over 6 months. Under 6 months require a signed agreement and a $25.00 deposit that is refundable when you bring back proof your animal has been altered. Adoption fee also includes current on vaccinations before leaving our care. Dog adoption fee: Spayed female dog - $45 and Neutered male dog - $45. Cat adoption fee: Spayed female cat - $45 and Neutered male cat - $45. We require a signed contract agreement when you adopt an animal from us. For cats who are declawed we require that they remain indoor cats and dogs we require fencing situations for certain breeds of dogs.
