Who We Are
Welcome to The Animal Health Center of Hays and Western Plains Animal Refuge! The Animal Health Center of Hays was established in 1997 by Dr. Jessica Braun to provide the most advanced and compassionate veterinary care in Western Kansas. Along the way, our dedication to the animal population of the region has become well known and has resulted in us becoming a sanctuary for unwanted pets, hence our new not-for-profit organization--Western Plains Animal Refuge. We do not euthanize animals for any reason other than severe health problems, but we cannot accept animals with any aggression towards humans or other animals. We are also involved with multiple rescue organizations across the nation, providing medical care for their animals--and even helping with transports across the country!
Adopting a friend
Adoption of any of our friends involves completing an adoption application, and then, if approved, our adoption contract. We work very hard to place animals in appropriate homes to provide lifelong companionship. Our adoption fees for cats or kittens includes leukemia and FIV testing, intestinal parasite screening and deworming as needed, ALL first year vaccinations, spay/neuter and front declaw (if wanted) and it is $85.00. Our adoption fees for dogs includes heartworm testing if old enough, intestinal parasite screening and deworming as needed, ALL first year vaccinations, and spay or neuter. All animals are kept current on heartworm, flea and tick prevention while in our care.
