Welcome
to Western Plains Animal Refuge. We are a non-profit, no-kill animal
rescue and shelter dedicated to making the world a kinder place for
animals and their people.

Through community partnerships and tax-deductible donations from
people like you, Western Plains Animal Refuge is providing medical
care, safe shelter, rehabilitation, placement services and adoptions
for hundreds of animals, big and small. Nearly
every day, we receive abandoned and injured cats, dogs, birds,
raccoons, guinea pigs, squirrels, owls, deer, beavers and just about every other kind
of wild and We can do more, and with your help, we will. We are working hard to become a community partner. We provide educational programs for schoolchildren, and work with local businesses to create educational fundraising opportunities. We also work closely with Animal Health Center of Hays in their Spay Day and Pay What You Can Days on the third Thursday of each month.
What We're Doing
domestic animal imaginable. We currently have a large
kennel area for dogs, cats, and other smaller animals, incubators, an
isolation room for very sick animals, an aviary rehabilitation pen,
pasture land, an outdoor wildlife rehabilitation pen, and a
full-service veterinary hospital on site, provided by the Animal Health
Center of Hays.
At the Refuge
Many of our animals have special needs,
and our expert volunteer staff of veterinarians and caregivers offers
them all the help they require. We find homes for a steady stream of
puppies and kittens, but we also help animals who are older, have
medical problems, or who would otherwise be euthanized by other types
of shelters. Sometimes
animals find homes quickly, and other times, we provide a safe, loving
environment for long periods of time.
In the Community
We've created an educational
and practical opportunity to reduce the number of unloved pets in the
central Kansas area. The next phase of this work – building
a larger kennel facility to allow us to make a difference in the
lives of more animals – will take more work and help from people
like you.
