We update our listings at least once a week with new pets! We are looking for people who want to give our special pals a permanent loving home. We are a no-kill shelter and we find homes for 97% of the pets in our care. Only pets with severe medical or behavioral problems are euthanized, and we have no set time limits for how long a pet may stay. Please continue reading below to learn about our adoption process.
Meet Our Pets at Petco in Overland Park on Saturday, Feb. 20!
We're planning to bring several of our adoptable dogs to the Petco near 95th & Quivira from 11-3. We will probably be bringing a few cats or kittens as well. If you'd like us to bring a particular dog to the event for you to meet, or to inquire about whether we'll be bringing any felines, send an email to karen@hsgkc.org. Read below for more info about our upcoming satellite events.
Movie Mutts: Fun Music Videos of our Adoptable Shelter Dogs
We've made several short music videos featuring some of our dogs who've been at our shelter for awhile. Go to our web site to see our Movie Mutt Superstars in action!.
Fletch Wins the Silver Medal in the ASPCA Shelter Dog Photo Contest
Fletch is our diamond in the ruff. He's a sweet-natured Pit Bull mix who had been horribly abused as a bait dog in dog fighting. When he first came to our shelter he was covered with wounds, malnourished, timid and depressed. Now he's a friendly lap dog who loves to give kisses-- and he's won a silver medal in the ASPCA Top Dog Photo Contest!
Would You Like to Adopt a Senior Dog?
We often know of seniors who need homes, many times through our Ray of Hope program. If you've got space in your home and heart for a dog who's in his or her retirement years, send an email to karen@hsgkc.org to find out if we can make a match for you.
Ray of Hope: Saving Lives at the KCK Animal Control Shelter
Ray of Hope is a partnership between the Humane Society of Greater KC and the Kansas City Kansas Animal Control to place pets from the city shelter before their time is up. We utilize a network of rescue groups, other no kill shelters and adoption events. The results so far have been significant -- The KCK Animal Control's euthanasia rate has decreased from 70% in 2007 to under 4% in 2009. In 2009, over 2400 pets from the KCKAC shelter have been saved. We need your support to keep this miraculous program going. Veterinary care is being provided at the Humane Society's expense, and it's costing us an average of $10,000 per month. If you can help us by donating to Ray of Hope, or by volunteering, please visit our web site at hsgkc.org.
Meet Tuesday & Our Other Black Coated Dogs & Cats
Tuesday is a 1 year old Vizsla/Lab mix. She's very bright and she loves to play in the yard with other dogs. She enjoys splashing in the baby pools at our shelter. She's medium size and weighs about 45 lbs. Tuesday's been at our shelter since she was a little pup. Dogs & cats with black coats are often the last to be adopted. Click here to view the wonderful black dogs & cats residing at our shelter now.
Our Cats
Our cats enjoy their days and nights sleeping, playing and eating in our spacious and sunny cat rooms. Most of our cats are not confined to cages. Our free roaming policy not only provides a nice environment for our felines while they wait for their new homes, but it also allows us to get to know them better. We know which ones are the most playful, or very mellow, or will come running at the opportunity to sit on a volunteer's lap. This helps us to make a perfect match for you. And it provides a nice environment for you to come in to get to know our cats, too.
Did you know that The Humane Society of Greater Kansas City provides low-cost spay/neuter services and preventive veterinary care? We employ three veterinarians and support staff for our clinic, which is located in our facility.
The mission of our clinic is to help people on a limited budget to care for their pets, to provide education about proper pet care, and to reduce pet overpopulation and save lives by spaying and neutering. In 2007, we spayed or neutered 6,114 pets and our veterinarians also saw 20,562 pets in our clinic. No other shelter in the Greater Kansas City area provides such a clinic to the general public. We do not screen based on financial need.
For more information about our clinic services, visit our web site at www.hsgkc.org.
Gilmore is an absolutely adorable guy and he's just as sweet as he looks. He's a 7 year old Rottweiler/Shepherd mix and he weighs 53 lbs. Sadly, he has arthritis in his hips so he walks like an older dog and isn't able to run and play. He's looking for a home with someone who wants a sweet dog to just hang out with and not a lot of activity. He's very affectionate and he loves to be brushed. He also loves to get treats and he'll catch them in the air! Gilmore had lived his whole life on a chain prior to coming to the KCK Animal Control shelter after his owner died. We met Gilmore at the city shelter and transferred him to our shelter as part of our Ray of Hope program. He's a super sweet guy and deserves a loving home with all the comforts.
Read more about Gilmore on his Petfinder page.
Peter is a handsome B&W cat with a sweet personality. He gets along with other cats and he enjoys a good game of chase the feather toy. Peter came to us in horrible shape, his face all swollen and scratched up. He has a food allergy and the poor guy was very itchy. We put him on Science Diet ZD formula and look at him now! He'll need to stay on the allergy food but otherwise he's a healthy boy. He is 6 years old. Read more about Peter on his Petfinder page.
Upcoming Satellite Adoption Schedule
Come meet our pets at one of our many satellite adoption events! We bring our dogs to a few events each month, and if it's an indoor event we may bring cats as well.
Please note that anyone wishing to adopt a pet from one of our satellite adoptions is asked to fill out an application. Pets are not allowed to be taken home that same day and applications will be reviewed on the following business day. We do this to give you time to think about this important decision and to allow us time to review applications for approval. Please visit the Pet Adoptions page of our web site for information about our adoption process. We do require a fenced yard for most of our dogs, though there may some who are appropriate for apartment living or circumstances where a fence may not be required. For more information about any of our events or satellites, visit our web site at www.hsgkc.org. If you'd like to inquire about a particular pet and whether or not he or she will be coming to our next event, send an email to karen@hsgkc.org.
Our Next Events:
Petco
Three Saturdays: February 6 & 20 and March 6
Near 95th & Quivira in Overland Park, next to Toys R Us
11am to 3pm
We'll be bringing several dogs and probably a few kittens or cats. You can send an email to karen@hsgkc.org to find out if we'll be bringing felines.
Who We Are
The Humane Society of Greater Kansas City is a private non-profit organization that has been helping animals in our community since 1912. We strive to promote the general welfare of dogs and cats in the greater Kansas City area. We do this by providing education, preventive veterinary care, adoptions, and spay/neuter services to prevent pet overpopulation.
Come Visit Us! In October of 2000, we moved to a new building and location at 5445 Parallel Parkway. It is a wonderful facility on 10 acres, and it provides a more spacious and comfortable environment for our pets while they wait for a new home. Windows and skylights to let in sunshine, cats playing and lounging in rooms filled with cat furniture and toys, cots for the dogs, and indoor/outdoor dog kennels with big play yards are some of the ways we've made life better for our adoptable pets. Our facility has also enabled our organization to expand all of the services we provide, including adoptions, education, and low cost spay/neutering and preventive veterinary care for the public.
If you have difficulty visiting us during adoption hours please email us to make arrangements.
Our goal is to send you home with a healthy pet and any information and support you may need to help your new pet adjust to his or her new home.

Some of our dogs are already using these products at satellites or at the shelter when going for walks.

Volunteering and Donations
Volunteers are a very important part of our organization! We offer many ways in which you can volunteer your time-- from coming to the shelter to walk dogs or brush cats, to assisting with special events and satellite adoptions. We really count on volunteers to help us with our fundraising events. And because many of our animals are with us for a long time before finding their new homes, it is very important to have volunteers to come out and spend time with them. You can volunteer as much or as little as you'd like-- we appreciate all that our volunteers do for us!
There is a volunteer orientation held once a month to get you started. For more information, please call (913) 596-1000 ext. 22 or visit the Volunteer page of our web site.
We accept all kinds of donations. Maintaining our shelter is very costly so monetary donations are especially needed. Visit the Donations page of our web site for more information and to make online donations. We also accept donations of items for our animals and shelter needs. If you would like to make another type of donation, or have any questions, please call (913) 596-1000 ext. 22 or visit our web site.
