Our Pet List

Adopting a Friend

We are looking for people who want to give our special pals a permanent loving home. We are a no-kill shelter and we find homes for 97% of the pets in our care. Only pets with severe medical or behavioral problems are euthanized, and we have no set time limits for how long a pet may stay. Please continue reading below to learn about our adoption process. We update our listings on Petfinder at least once each week so that you know who is available for adoption.

1912 - 2012: We're Celebrating 100 Years of Serving Animals in Our Community!

The Humane Society of Greater Kansas City is a private non-profit organization that has been helping animals in our community since 1912. We strive to promote the general welfare of dogs and cats in the greater Kansas City area. We do this by providing education, preventive veterinary care, adoptions, and spay/neuter services to prevent pet overpopulation.

Meet Our Dogs at Brookside Barkery & Bath on Saturday, February 18! (Brookside location)

We'll be bringing several dogs to the Brookside Barkery & Bath in Brookside from 11am to 3pm. Read below for more info. If you'd like us to bring a particular dog to the event for you to meet, send an email to karen@hsgkc.org.

Special Needs Pets & Sweet Seniors

We take in many dogs and cats with injuries or medical issues and provide them with the care they need. We also care for some sweet seniors until they find the loving homes they deserve. Visit our hsgkc.org site's Adoption page for a listing of some of our special needs pets and seniors.

Our Featured Pets

Smiley and Dotty

Smiley is a very friendly and good-natured guy. He's a 4 year old Pit Bull/Pointer/Lab mix. He's a good-looking dog with a brindle and white coat, bright eyes and a great smile. Smiley loves people and he loves to play fetch. He needs a home without smaller dogs or cats. Smiley has been with us for a long time and we'd love to find a forever home for this fun and friendly guy. We transferred Smiley to our shelter from the KCK Animal Control shelter as part of our Ray of Hope program. Read more about Smiley on his Petfinder page.

Dotty is an adorable orange tabby. She's very sweet, she enjoys playing with toys, and she gets along well with other cats. Dotty is 4 years old and she's been at our shelter since she was a kitten. We have no idea why she hasn't been adopted yet, but we'd love for her to find her forever home soon. Read more about Dotty on her Petfinder page.

Ray of Hope: Saving Lives at the KCK Animal Control Shelter

Ray of Hope is a partnership between the Humane Society of Greater KC and the Kansas City Kansas Animal Control to place pets from the city shelter before their time is up. We utilize a network of rescue groups, other no kill shelters and adoption events. The results so far have been significant -- The euthanasia rate at KCK Animal Control has decreased from 70% to 1%. In 2011, a total of 2,237 pets were saved. There were over 7,300 pets saved from 2009 through 2011. We need your support to keep this miraculous program going. Veterinary care is being provided at the Humane Society's expense, and it's costing us an average of $10,000 per month. If you can help us by donating to Ray of Hope, or by volunteering, please visit our web site's Ray of Hope page.

Upcoming Satellite Adoption Schedule

Come meet our pets at one of our many satellite adoption events! We bring our dogs to a few events each month, and if it's an indoor event we may bring cats as well.

Please note that anyone wishing to adopt a pet from one of our satellite adoptions is asked to fill out an application. Pets are not allowed to be taken home that same day and applications will be reviewed on the following business day. We do this to give you time to think about this important decision and to allow us time to review applications for approval. Please visit the Adoption Process page of our web site for information about our adoption process. We do require a fenced yard for most of our dogs, though there may some who are appropriate for apartment living or circumstances where a fence may not be required. For more information about any of our events or satellites, visit our web site at www.hsgkc.org. If you'd like to inquire about a particular pet and whether or not he or she will be coming to our next event, send an email to karen@hsgkc.org.

Our Cats

Our cats enjoy their days and nights sleeping, playing and eating in our spacious and sunny cat rooms. Most of our cats are not confined to cages. Our free roaming policy not only provides a nice environment for our felines while they wait for their new homes, but it also allows us to get to know them better. We know which ones are the most playful, or very mellow, or will come running at the opportunity to sit on a volunteer's lap. This helps us to make a perfect match for you. And it provides a nice environment for you to come in to get to know our cats, too.

Our Adoption Process

An application is required to adopt a pet and applicants must meet our adoption requirements. You can download a pet adoption application from our web site and then fax or email it back to us.

Please note that most of our dogs do require a fenced yard, though there may some who are appropriate for apartment living or circumstances where a fence may not be required.

If you decide you'd like to adopt one of our pets, we reserve the pet for you but we generally don't send the pet home with you that day.

Please visit the Adoption Process page of our web site for more information about our adoption process.

If you have questions, please email us or call (913) 596-1000. Email is checked and replied to Monday thru Friday.

Adoption Hours & Fees

Adoption Hours are:
Monday thru Friday: 9am-5pm
Saturday: 9am-4pm

If you have difficulty visiting us during adoption hours please email us to make other arrangements.

Our goal is to send you home with a healthy pet and any information and support you may need to help your new pet adjust to his or her new home.

CATS

The adoption fee for cats is $50, or two cats for $85.

All of our cats and kittens have been examined by a veterinarian, spayed or neutered, vaccinated, tested for feline leukemia & FIV, microchipped, dewormed, and treated for fleas & ticks. Kittens who are too young to receive all the necessary boosters and/or the first rabies shot may be brought back to us for those vaccines at no extra charge.

The Pets Incredible Completely Cats Series DVD is fun and easy and it will walk you through the steps on how to prepare for your cat. Using this system will quickly help your cat learn where he needs to "go" while you learn how to help your furry friend by preventing unwanted behaviors, and so much more! It's fun to watch, easy to understand, and it covers many of the basic behavior questions people have when they adopt a new cat: Preparing Your Home, Litter Box Training, Playtime & Toys, Introductions, Scratching, Kids & Cats, Spraying.

Low-Cost Spaying and Neutering Services and Preventive Veterinary Care

Did you know that The Humane Society of Greater Kansas City provides low-cost spay/neuter services and preventive veterinary care? We employ veterinarians and support staff for our clinic, which is located in our facility. The mission of our clinic is to help people on a limited budget to care for their pets, to provide education about proper pet care, and to reduce pet overpopulation and save lives by spaying and neutering. However, we do not screen based on financial need.

For more information about our clinic services, visit our web site.

Volunteering and Donations

Volunteers are a very important part of our organization! We offer many ways in which you can volunteer your time-- from coming to the shelter to walk dogs or brush cats, to assisting with special events and satellite adoptions. We really count on volunteers to help us with our fundraising events. And because many of our animals are with us for a long time before finding their new homes, it is very important to have volunteers to come out and spend time with them. You can volunteer as much or as little as you'd like-- we appreciate all that our volunteers do for us!

There is a volunteer orientation held once a month to get you started. For more information, please call (913) 596-1000 ext. 122 or visit the Volunteer page of our web site.

We accept all kinds of donations. Maintaining our shelter is very costly so monetary donations are especially needed. Visit the Donations page of our web site for more information and to make online donations. We also accept donations of items for our animals and shelter needs. If you would like to make another type of donation, or have any questions, please call (913) 596-1000 ext. 122 or visit our web site.

Come Visit Us!

In October of 2000, we moved to a new building and location at 5445 Parallel Parkway. It is a wonderful facility on 10 acres, and it provides a clean and comfortable environment for our pets while they wait for a new home. Windows and skylights to let in sunshine, cats playing and lounging in rooms filled with cat furniture and toys, cots for the dogs, and indoor/outdoor dog kennels with big play yards are some of the ways we've made life better for our adoptable pets. Our facility also enabled our organization to expand all of the services we provide, including adoptions, education, and low cost spay/neutering and preventive veterinary care for the public.

DIRECTIONS: We are located at 5445 Parallel Parkway in Kansas City, KS. From the junction of I-70 and I-635, we are about 1.5 miles west and 2 miles north. We're very easy to find and the interstates make for a fast trip from anywhere. Please see our web site for more detailed directions from anywhere in the city.
