For People Seeking a Loving Cat Companion

~ Adopt a cat from your local shelter today. Adopting a cat will enrich your world in so many different ways. Here’s how:

Cats will keep you entertained with their playful antics.
Cats are very affectionate and love to cuddle with you.
Having a cat can reduce your blood pressure and prevent heart disease.
Cats are very clean -- they bathe themselves!
Cats are independent and can be left alone while you are at work.
Cats do not need to be housebroken -- using the litter box comes naturally to them.
Cats do not need a lot of space. They are perfect pets for apartments and smaller homes.
Taking care of a cat can help teach a child responsibility and humane values.
Cats get plenty of exercise living indoors. Just 15 minutes of playtime each day will satisfy a cat.

Approximately 4 million homeless cats end up in animal shelters every year in the United States. By adopting, you’ll be saving a life. And don’t forget these important cat care steps once you’ve adopted your new feline friend:

Spay/neuter: If the animal shelter you adopt from does not spay or neuter their adopted animals, take your cat to a veterinarian for this simple procedure. Your cat will actually be happier and healthier for it, and you won’t have to worry later about finding homes for a litter of kittens.

ID Tags and Microchips: Your cat can’t carry a wallet, so he needs a collar with an ID tag. Be sure to include your cat’s name and your name, address and phone number on the tag. Even indoor cats can slip outside, so make sure he’s wearing the tag at all times. Microchips are another excellent way of identifying your pet. These tiny chips are permanently implanted under your cat’s skin and therefore can never come off or get lost.

. Improve your life with a cat’s companionship, and combat the tragedy of overpopulation! Visit your local animal shelter to adopt a cat!

Our Shelter

Note: Anderson Animal Care & Control is under new management. Our goal is to find a forever home for every adoptable animal in the shelter and to only euthanize those that are sick or aggressive. We are asking for the community's support and involvement in order to achieve this.

The Anderson Animal Care and Control is a city animal control agency. We receive approximately 7,500 animals a year. Due to this large number not all animals will find a home. Most are picked up as strays with little history on them, however some are owner surrenders. All available information is listed on Petfinder.

The shelter is always full. There are dozens of cats and dogs that are in desperate need of a permanent home everyday. Come and visit our animals - we are easy to find and our animals love the attention!

Kuranda Dog Beds raise comfort level for shelter dogs!

~ If you would like to help our shelter please consider donating a bed. Some of our dogs only have the cold hard concrete floor to lay on. They would love a nice bed to lay on while they wait to find their Forever Home! Thanks! ~

"UNTIL THERE ARE NONE - ADOPT ONE! "

Adopting a Pet

All dogs & cats will be spayed or neutered at one of several lowcost clinics. The cost of the spay/neuter must be prepaid and is included in the adoption fee. The new owner will be responsible to pick up the adopted animal at the vet clinic used.

There are several other specifications that are on the contract. Including notification of the shelter if your address changes, you must return the pet to the shelter if it doesn't work out, etc. Please make sure to read the contract thoroughly before signing the agreement.

It is $100.00 to adopt a dog or puppy. Cats and kittens are available for $85.00. These fees reflect vaccinations including rabies, deworming and medical tests such as heartworm for canines and feleuk/fiv for felines and the spay/neuter cost. You must also purchase a city license if you live in the city of Anderson.

It is suggested that you take your new pet to the vet as soon as possible after adoption to make sure that they are healthy. We offer an initial free vet visit at several locations.

Food for Thought

Three Things You Can Do To Make a Positive Change For Homeless Shelter Animals!

ADOPT OR RESCUE the next time you choose to add a new pet to your family. When you buy from a pet shop you are encouraging puppy mills to produce more poorly bred puppies that will add to the pet overpopulation problem that already exists. SAVE A LIFE! Shelters and rescue organizations always have pure-breeds in addition to loving and wonderful mixed breeds.

SPAY AND NEUTER Every Pet That You Have. Please don't add to the existing pet overpopulation problem. Millions of homeless animals housed in US Shelters die each year due to the lack of responsible owners. SAVE LIVES! SPAY AND NEUTER YOUR PETS! Look for low cost spay and neuter services at www.indiana-paw.com

KEEP YOUR PETS for Their Entire Lifetime! Choosing to own a pet is a lifetime commitment. Honor your promise to love and provide a safe and healthy life for the pet you choose. When challenges arise such as family structure change, moves, pet behavior issues, health or financial change, seek out the resources that can help keep you and your pet together. Animals are living beings that bond with you, offering a lifetime of unconditional love.

Ways to be kind to animals:

1) Report animal abuse. Violence against animals is terrible enough, but it could also be a sign that other violent behavior, like domestic abuse, is happening.

2) Speak out for animals. Get active in local animal welfare policies and legislation.

3) Kindness starts at home. Teach the people in your life, especially children, about the importance of treating animals humanely.

4) Adopt a pet from a shelter or breed-specific rescue. About 8 to 12 million animals enter shelters every year, and more than half of these pets will have to be euthanized because of a lack of homes. Want a purebred Labrador? Check with your local shelter first -- they take in mutts and purebreds.

5) Help solve the tragedy of euthanasia of adoptable animals by not contributing to the problem. If you have pets, make sure they are spayed or neutered.

6) Make a donation to your local animal shelter. A donation can be your time, money or needed items like pet food or laundry detergent. Call them first and see what they need.

7) Be a responsible pet guardian. Pets should be microchipped and should always wear a collar with an ID tag, so they can be reunited with you quickly if they are ever lost. And take your pet to the veterinarian every year for vaccinations and a health check.
