City of Rushville Animal Shelter

650 Van Sickle Street
Rushville, IN 46173

Our Mission

The Rushville Animal Shelter provides animal control services to all unincorporated towns of Rush County residents and a safe shelter for stray or unwanted animals of Rush County.

Although we are a city shelter and we do not turn anyone away, we do not euthanize based on the number of days an animal has been in our care. We will do everything our limited resources will allow to provide a comfortable stay for each animal. Yes, there are times we will need to decide to provide peace for an animal through euthanasia. This decision is never taken lightly and is done when the animal is suffering from illness or injury that is beyond our ability to address and for animals who simply can not coexist with the public without causing harm.

While the animals are in our care we will attempt to address each animal's physical and mental needs to give them the best chance at adoption and to also limit their stress while in a shelter environment. Ultimately our goal is for each of the animals in our care to have a home environment with a family who can give them the individual attention they all deserve.

Adoption Policy

The adoption process is fairly simple. We do have a few requirements for adopters, but nothing that should make the adoption process impossible.

-Adoption fees are by cash or check only and non-refundable, we also are not able to give change
-Holds are not accepted, all adoptions are first come, first serve
-If you have another dog at home, bring them along if you wish for us to do a dog intro (some of the dogs in our care will require a dog intro)
-If you are a renter, please bring your rental agreement with you and have the pet agreement section easily identifiable. If there is a verbal agreement with your landlord, have them write out the requirements of their pet policy on their company letter head.
-Bring a leash and collar or a carrier with you, otherwise it will be an additional $3 charge for a slip lead or take home box

We encourage and allow home trials at no cost and up to 3 days. This is a great way to determine if a pet is right for your family and home without making a commitment.
