Elkhart Co. Humane Society
Who We Are
About Us
-------------------------------------------
The Humane Society of Elkhart County is on the front lines protecting the orphaned, unwanted and defenseless animals of Elkhart County. Every single day through care, education and legislation, the HSEC is making an impact for the abandoned and neglected animlas in Elkhart County. We are the only Humane Society in Elkhart County.
History
------------------------------------------
The HSEC has been in operation since 1939. Our first shelter was merely a house of only 1,000 SF. Today, we are in a building of 10,000 SF and overcrowding is still an issue for the shelter.
Funding
------------------------------------------
We are a Not-For-Profit organization. This means we require donations and funding from the city & county government to operate. Without donations, we wouldnt be able to operate. Which would cause all of our animals to be homeless!!
Population Served
---------------------------------------------
We serve a community of over 200,000 people. By the year 2010, 30,000 more people will move into our area and 90% will own a pet. It's very important that everyone in our county is educated and knows that we are here to help them find the perfect pet!
Statistics
---------------------------------------------
The HSEC takes in over 10 thousand animals each year from anyone and anywhere at any time. In 2007, the shelter took in over 12 thousand animals, accomplished more than 2,000 adoptions, 1,500 breed rescues and helped return more than 1,000 pets to their owners.
Volunteer
The shelter is always in need of volunteers. Our volunteers come to us in many different ways. Some come to us through schools or community service. Others come to us through our volunteer organization, the Guild Committee.
Volunteers are needed at the shelter to help with feeding, cleaning, walking, grooming, laundry and odd jobs. There are also times when all that is needed is to give the animals some much needed attention.
This volunteer application will be reviewed by office personnel. You must attend an orientation prior to your application being approved.
The information you provide will help us connect you with the individuals who are working in the areas you indicate you would like to volunteer. Thank you for applying to the Elkhart Humane Society.
