As of Friday, February 3, ARK Animal "Rescue" has taken over the LaGrange County Animal Shelter. The very first thing they did was to kill more than ten healthy animals. Apparently they will kill off the extra animals so that they can pretend to be "no kill" when it is officially announced that the shelter has been Privatized. In a previous article in the Kendallville Sun Times, the concern of ARK was that the county had not been able to retain a director who was no kill. Everyone wanted a no kill shelter, but they were not educated enough to realize the correlation between no kill and more animals to take care of.
Unfortunately, a dog that I had had neutered, vaccinated and heartworm tested was the first to go. This dog had a horrible life before he entered the shelter. He was abandoned, scared, and thin. He had to fend for himself in freezing weather until a kind stranger picked him up. He would not let her back in her car, so I was dispatched to remove him. He did not trust anyone for almost a week, then his entire demeanor changed and he became a loving, happy dog. I had him vetted, and he was a dog that belonged to ARK. I had kept in contact with the woman who found him, and she had a foster home ready for him. He was supposed to go there on Saturday, Feb 4th. Less than two hours after I was escorted from the shelter, they killed him along with at least four other dogs. Sadly, the people who are now caring for the animals have no qualms about killing, and are able to carry it out with no feelings of remorse or regret. By all definitions, the LaGrange County Animal Shelter, whether run by ARK or the county is no longer a no kill shelter. All of the animals there are at risk.
Sadly, Dora (AKA "Adorable Dora", and "Doralicious") died Saturday, June 4th. She was able to have a happy life for a few short months, and was loved and cherished by everyone who met her. She was camping out with me, which was one of her favorite things to do. She died peacefully in her sleep. I knew that she wouldn't live long, but I still wasn't ready to say goodbye to her yet. Thanks to all of you who made her short life more normal. After her heart procedure, she was able to run and play. She loved playing fetch with the kids also. She will always be in our hearts, and will remain one of those special dogs I was blessed to know in this lifetime! RIP my sweet girl.
Sincerely,
LOIS
Merry needs a family who will just give her a little extra love. Merry doesn't see well, but that doesn't stop her from having a good time! She loves playing with puppies or her other doggie friends. Once Merry knows the "lay of the land" she gets along very well. With an approved application, Merry's adoption fee is only $50. Merry may or may not still be alive, as the shelter would not allow me to remove her. Please call them at 260-463-4142 to see if they have had her killed or she is still available.
