WHO WE ARE

Serving Indianapolis and the surrounding counties since 1905, the Humane Society of Indianapolis provides vital services to animals and people alike through sheltering and adopting animals, providing positive reinforcement behavior training for both adoptable animals and for owned animals through our public training classes, and outreach through our community and shelter programs.

A private, nonprofit organization that receives no public or private government funding, the Humane Society of Indianapolis is supported solely by contributions, grants, bequests, investments, adoption fees and other fees for service.

OUR VISION

Our vision is that all central Indiana animals are treated with dignity and respect and live free from cruelty, harm and neglect.

OUR MISSION

The Humane Society of Indianapolis is the leading voice for the welfare of animals and improving their quality of life. HSI is the first choice in providing direct services for shelter cats and dogs, including adoption, foster home placement, behavior training, appropriate medical care, and affordable spay/neuter services. As the voice for the animals, HSI brings together like-minded animal-focused individuals and groups to educate the public about animal welfare issues and concerns. For over 100 years, it’s all about the animals.

OUR VALUES

OUR HISTORY

Since 1905, the Humane Society of Indianapolis (HSI) has provided shelter and care to animals in need on their way to loving homes. Originally started to help both animals and families in need, the Humane Society eventually switched to focus solely on animal care. In its current location at 79th and Michigan Road since the 1960's, HSI's facility now spans over 32,000 square feet on 13.5 acres and has cared for over 10,000 per year.

In a caring and nurturing environment, the work of HSI deepens the bond between people and their companion animals. Whether you are ready to adopt a new pet, turn over an animal to our care, participate in canine obedience training, give your dog a run in our Pet Park or volunteer your time to help our animals, you can celebrate your love of animals at HSI.

Free Behavior Helpline

Behavior problems are the most common reason pets are surrendered to shelters. Our helpline provides you with information and tools to modify your pet’s behavior before you make the decision to surrender him or her to an animal shelter. If you have concerns with your pet's behavior, contact our free behavior helpline for advice today: 317-876-2173.

Volunteer

Volunteers help staff supplement daily activities as well as provide love and socialization for our homeless animals. If you love animals and want to make a difference in their lives, the Humane Society of Indianapolis offers many opportunities.

For information about volunteering, see our website or contact Volunteer Coordinator Shawna Sims at 317-872-5650 ext. 106 or volunteer@indyhumane.org
