March 23, 2009
Since we began posting animals on Petfinder.com on December 29, 2008, we have helped place over 100 pets into loving, permanent homes or with rescue groups. We have also helped prevent any pets from being euthanized for several months!
January 9, 2009 Today our Mayor and Chief of Police received a letter from a member of a "rescue" that has never been to our county or our shelter.
This letter contained exaggerations and blatant lies regarding the conditions
of the facility as he interpreted from another person. This is not a modern
facility, but the animals are well cared for, fed, watered and ALL have raised
shelters with bedding. To dispel any vicious rumors that have been circulating, the shelter is NOT closing. As always, we will attempt to find homes for as many animals as possible. Who
We Are The Jay County Animal Control is an open door, municipal facility
committed to protecting animals from conditions harmful to their well being,
and to protecting the citizens of the community from stray, unvaccinated, and
dangerous animals. We strive to promote a harmonious atmosphere between the
animals and the people of our community. At this time, there is NO ADOPTION
FEE! Why are the pets free? We understand
that there are a lot of initial expenses incurred when you get a new pet including;
Spay/neuter, Yearly vaccinations, general health exams, preventative medicines,
obedience classes, food, dishes, collars, leashes, toys and beds to name just
a few. We want you to be able to provide your new pet with everything that they
will need right away! The most important thing to us is that these precious
souls get into a great home as quickly as possible. We welcome out of county and out
of state adoptions. We do our best to let the public know what is available. There
are numerous choices that could be available and not posted. Your perfect companion
could be waiting for you! If you see an animal that you want to adopt, please come to
the shelter. We DO NOT hold animals. All animals for adoption are on a first
come first serve basis. No exceptions. Finding
a Lost Pet Your best bet to find your lost
pet is to come to the shelter and look. You are welcome to bring a copy of a
picture with your information attached to give to the staff. We will do what
we can to help you but you know your pet better than anyone and we can't stress
enough how important it is to come to the shelter and look for yourself. You
can also post at the Jay County Animal Network
Come
Visit Us! Remember to call us before you come
so we don't miss you.
Along with the stray animals we pick up, we take every domestic animal that
comes to our door; young, old, sick, or injured. Although state and county laws
require animals to be held a minimum of 5 days, we try to shelter some for months
while we try to find them new homes. But more keep coming every day, and we
can only house so many at a time. As a result, we must humanely euthanize those
animals for which no homes can be found. We have one Animal Control Officer
who covers the entire 384 square miles of Jay county.
