Indiana Birddog Rescue is a Petfinder site dedicated to listing German Shorthaired Pointers and other birddogs that are potentially in danger of being put to sleep due to overcrowding conditions in shelters all across the Midwest. Most dogs are on limited time so please call or email the contact information we provide on each petfinder page to rescue or adopt. This site was created by the volunteers of Illinois Birddog Rescue, Inc (English Pointer and Setter Adoptions) to help our GSP friends. We are hopeful that more GSP's will be rescued and more foster homes will be found for GSP Rescue National.

DONATIONS NEEDED FOR BABY DEMPSEY!!!
Baby Jack Dempsey came into our rescue on 6/23/09. He was taken to the vet immediately and upon further examination it was discovered he has Parvovirus. This is the worst news anyone in rescue wants to hear. Little baby Dempsey has a 50/50 chance of surviving- poor sweet little guy. We are truly blessed that the vet who diagnosed the little guy is willing to take him home and care for him with a reduced cost to the rescue. We will still need many donations to help cover the cost and pray that the little dude will recover.
Please help us reach our fundraising goal so we can continue our work helping save these homeless hunters and other abused and neglected dogs and puppies! We have a long way to go and any amount --big or small--will make a huge difference especially if the dog or puppy is in an area where they use gas chambers to euthanize.
We see the worst that humans can do to defenceless animals- but with your donation- we will be able to do more to end the suffering of many frightened dogs and puppies.

Illinois Birddog Rescue, Inc. is a 501c3 not-for-profit organization dedicated to saving, transporting, vetting, fostering, and adopting homeless American Field bred Pointers and English Setters- a group of canines commonly known as BIRDDOGS.. All of the dogs in our foster care program were strays or owner surrenders pulled from shelters from all over the United States. Perhaps some weren't winning enough in Field Trials, maybe some became too old to hunt or to have litters of puppies, but many were gun shy and most had suffered from neglect or abuse. Sadly, all were in danger of being euthanized - never reaching their full potential until we pulled them to safety. Thru patience, kindness and commitment, these dogs do regain their confidence in the IBR program and many are back working in the field to the joy of their adopters.
HOMELESS HUNTERS
Nearly 99% of our adopted purebred Pointers and Setters go to pet homes- loved and adored by their new families. However--our special adopted working hunters dispel old wives tales passed on through generations of birddog owners. For instance, altering a working hunter never lessens the desire to hunt and living indoors (and in most cases on the furniture or in bed with their owners) also has no negative affect on their bird scenting abilities. Also, dogs with a strong bond to their owners are that much more confident and happy to work side by side with their master.
Illinois Birddog Rescue's extra patient training techniques show over and over that kindness and praise can reverse the damage done by cruelty and painful training methods. We are so proud of these magnificent resilient dogs.
OUR FOSTER CARE PROGRAM
We are funded solely from adoption fees and donations. Since our slow beginning in October of 2000, we have placed over 700 dogs and puppies. With the Economy being the way it is-donations are way down and we are struggling badly to make ends meet. While our overhead is minimal since we don't have the expense and overhead of a shelter facility- our vetting bills are sky high. Having to treat 8 dogs - CAMERON/ ES, RUGBY/ ES, ABE/ P, BELLE/ ES, DUCKIE/ ES, CLIFFORD/ P, ABBEY LANE/ P, ROSA/ P- for heartworm disease in the first quarter of 2009 has really put IBR deep in the red. Each treatment runs the rescue about $300 for pre and post care- even with the genenous discounts we get from the Animal Hospital of Gurnee. ALL of these dogs had the $100 Tick panel to make sure we got any tick borne illnesses (Lyme Disease, Ehrlichia, Anaplasma & Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever) under control before treatment as well. Any time we accept a heartworm positive dog into our program we know it will be a $400 vet bill at least. As our adoption donation is only $325- it is from donations and fundraisers that makes any of this possible.
Duckie says, "Will you help me?"
We still need to treat DASH/ P for heartworm disease and we are still trying to pay off GIGI's mastectomy bill while gearing up to get DUCKIE ready for her next procedure- a complete mastectomy surgery in July. She's already survived heartworm treatment and before that we were treating her for Lyme Disease, Ehrlichia AND Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever. She truly is a courageous little girl!!!
GiGi's bill was nearly $1700 because she had complications so we can expect Duckie's to be at least $1000 or more. If you can help us with any of these dogs- please mail a donation to IBR, PO Box 364, Wood Dale, IL 60191.
In memory of Westleigh- we keep trying to save more.
Please look at the blog dedicated to the wondeful folks who have contributed to Westleigh's Memorial Fund. Please consider giving what you can to help us continue our work.
Most of our rescue dogs are in foster care in the Chicagoland area with a wonderful group of volunteers who dedicate their free time and energy to help the dogs get ready for their forever homes. We are also greatful for our satelite foster homes in MN, WI, IA, IN, and OH. While in foster care, the rescues live in a home and are socialized with other dogs, people, children, and cat tested if possible. To assure that they will make good house pets, our rescues are also taught basic manners, are housebroken and crate trained. Unfortunately many of the rescues that come in have been abused or are in poor health. We take care of any medical issues and give these dogs lots of TLC.
The dogs and puppies listed below are either in foster care or in shelters across the Midwest. MANY are in danger of being put to sleep because the shelters are over-crowded and the dogs have limited time. If you are interested in adopting one of these URGENT dogs or puppies- please contact the shelter directly with the contact information provided. While we have limited foster homes- we feel that it is our obligation to list as many dogs for help as we can.
We do require homes with fenced in yards and non-smoking homes. Our priority is finding loving pet homes first, but if we are able to test our birdier dogs for their hunting abilities, we will place our dogs in pet/hunting homes. ALL DOGS MUST LIVE INDOORS.
