Mission Statement

Happy Labs Rescue, Inc. is a 501 (c) (3) nonprofit organization dedicated to the health and well being of the Labrador Retriever Breed. Our main objective is to take in, assist, rehabilitate and re-home unwanted, neglected or homeless Labrador Retrievers and Labrador Retriever mixes of all ages.

Adoption Process and Fees

If you see a Labrador that looks like he/she would be a good fit in your family, please email us for an application. We do check vet references and do a home visit before approval. Our labs MUST be kept inside the house. Labs are people dogs and they do not do good outside on a chain. You MUST also have a fenced in back yard. Labs need to be able to run and get plenty of excersise. Our adoption fees depends on the amount of veterinary costs incurred. We spay/neuter all our labs then get then healthy by getting them up to date on shots, heartworm tested and on monthly heart worm preventive meds.

Who We Are

Happy Labs Rescu, Inc. is a 501 (c) (3) non profit organization that takes in Labrador Retrievers and lab mixes of all ages. Our dogs come from shelters, owners surrenders who no longer can, or will, provide for them and, all too often, strays that are never searched for. We evaluate the dogs' health and temperament. The rescued Lab goes directly to a veterinarian for a spay/neuter, vaccinations and any other necessary medical treatment, including heart worm checked. If positive Happy Lab treats the dog. Many of these Labs have been neglected,not only in a nutritional/medical sense, but also in a psychological/emotional sense. This socialization process promotes the dog's confidence, willingness to learn and trust. For many Labs, this is the first love and kindness they have ever known.

EVERYONE WANTS A LAB BUT DO YOU REALLY KNOW WHAT IT TAKES TO CARE FOR A LAB ???

The Labrador Retriever ("Labrador" or "Lab" for short), is one of several kinds of retriever and is the most popular breed of dog in the United States. The breed is exceptionally friendly, intelligent, and good natured, making them excellent companions and working dogs. Labrador Retrievers are known to be one of the fastest learning breeds of dog and respond well to praise.

APPEARANCE

Labradors are relatively large with males typically weighing 60 to 80 lbs and females 45 to 70 lbs. They are energetic, outgoing dogs. Their coats are short and smooth, and can be black, yellow or brown (called "chocolate") in color. Yellow labs varies from white to light gold to a fox red. Yellow labs can have black or pink noses, chocolate and black lab's noses match the coat color. The English and the American lines differ slightly. Labs are bred in England as a medium size dog, shorter and stockier with fuller faces than their American counterparts which are bred as a larger dog. The breed tends to shed their hair regularly throughout the year. Lab hair is usually fairly short and straight and the tail quite broad and strong.

TEMPERAMENT and ACTIVITIES

Labradors are a well-balanced and remarkably versatile breed, adaptable to a wide range of functions as well as making very good pets. They are easily trained and are a very obedient breed. They are loyal companions that share the love you give to them. They are friendly dogs and are great with children. As a rule they are not excessively prone to territorialism, pining, insecurity, aggression, destructiveness, hypersensitivity, or other difficult traits which manifest in a variety of breeds, and as the name suggest, they are excellent retrievers. As an extension of this, they instinctively enjoy holding objects and even hands or arms in their mouths, which they can do with great gentleness. They are, however, prone to chewing objects (though they can easily be trained out of this behavior). Labradors have a reputation as a very mellow breed and an excellent family dog (including a good reputation with children of all ages), but some lines (particularly those that have continued to be bred specifically for their skills at working in the field rather than for their appearance are particularly fast and athletic. Their fun-loving boisterousness and lack of fear can result in mischief and may require training and firm handling at times to ensure it does not get out of hand. Most labs enjoy retrieving a ball endlessly and other forms of activity (such as dog agility or flyball), are considerably "food and fun" oriented very trainable and open-minded to new things, and thrive on human attention and interaction, which they find hard to get enough of. Many labs are notorious "chowhounds"; they will eat anything that isn't nailed down, and are experts at manipulating soft-hearted humans into giving them treats/extra food/table scraps/etc. The lab owner must carefully control his/her dog's food intake to avoid obesity and its associated health problems.

HEALTH

Labs are somewhat prone to hip dysplasia especially the larger dogs, through not as much as some other breeds. Labs are sometimes prone to ear infections, because their floppy ears trap warm moist air. This is easy to control buts needs regular checking to ensure that a problem is not building up unseen. A healthy Lab ear should look clean and light pink (almost white) inside. Labs are often overfed and are allowed to become overweight due to their blatant enjoyment of treats, hearty appetites, and endearing behavior towards people. A healthy lab should keep a very slight hourglass waist and be fit and lithe, rather than fat and heavy-set. Excessive weight is strongly implicated as a risk factor in the later development of hip dysplasia and diabetes, and can contribute to general reduced health when older. Many times labs also suffer from the risk of knee problems. A luxating patella is a common occurrence in the knee where the leg is often bow shaped.

PUPPY MILLS

Because the labrador is such a popular breed, they are often reared in puppy mills where the people responsible care primarily for profit, and not for the dog's well being. Labrador Retrievers are truly wonderful, loving, companions and can become part of any family if trained and loved correctly. The labradoodle is a common mixed-breed dog that combines a labrador with a poodle. Not recognized by any major kennel club. Adopted 02-09-07 Thanks Angela for giving Pepper his forever home I had meant to send these photo's earlier but my mother went into the hospital the following week and passed away 2/24. I am so happy she was able to meet Pepper - whom she renamed Duke as no one in the family could understand "Pepper" and kept calling Duke/Pepper a she. Mom also noticed 2 light colored areas under each of his shoulder blades that you can only see when he's sitting down - they are perfectly symmetrical. She called them his "angel wings" - she just fell in love with him! Duke is such a good boy! He loved having all the relatives in the house (for the funeral) and is a great comfort not only to me but also to my Dad and brother. I believe the timing worked in a way to where he was able to be with us during this time that is very hard for my family. We took him to Edinburgh outlets with us yesterday and he was a hit with everyone from senior citizens to babies. He was so tired after his very busy and very social day! Since my Dad isn't a shopper he walked with him and sat outside on a bench with him as we went into the shops. He's starting at Camp Bow Wow this week and I hope to have us enrolled in training classes by the end of March. I would like to continue to work with him because I think he would make a great therapy dog to take into nursing homes, hospitals, etc. Hey Guys, Duke here...just thought I'd write you a quick e-mail to update you on what's been going on in my little Lab life.... Well, my agent (Angela) and I finally moved! We bought the house in June but didn't move until the end of July because she wanted to make a few changes inside and put up a nice 6' privacy fence for me in the backyard. I LOVE IT! Every night we play ball outside and I'm trying to learn Frisbee but I just don't get it. Why would I try to catch a flying saucer when a ball is so much easier to carry?! I have much more room and, at first,I wasn't too sure about the whole moving thing but each week we went over to visit the new house and sometimes I would even hang out there during the day with my grand agent while he did some work around the house. So, when moving day finally came I was familiar with the house but I didn't really relax until most of the boxes were put away. Now I'm fine and like to curl up on the couch in the office in the evening (I need some private time every now and then - it's tough being adorable all day!). I also learned to swim a few weeks ago! I went w/my agent and the rest of our family to visit a few cousins who live on the lake in Angola, IN. They have two Brittany Spaniels - Jake & Jesse. They were ok but I really liked the female yellow lab - Brie who lived next door. Saturday night I walked from the shoreline right into the water but then there was a drop-off and I dunked under and came up hacking a little so my agent's brother held my belly and I learned to get up on a raft and jump in. This was a little embarrassing in front of Brie who spends all day in the water fishing by the shore. She took pity on me and showed me the ropes with this whole swimming thing and I caught on. Sunday I went boating and we stopped at a sandbar to swim but I wouldn't jump off the boat. So, my agent caught on and threw in a buoy. Naturally I went after it (not jumping in mind you - climbing down a ladder. Hey - that's how the humans got in!?!) After I retrieved the buoy my agent helped me climb back up the ladder. I did it two more times but never jumped - I kind of hopped the last time but only from the bottom step. They took turns holding my belly until I got comfortable in the water. On the boat ride back I sat in the rear of the boat w/my ears flapping and a wide grin .... I am truly a happy Lab!

Some of the pictures were taken back in March. I got lots of cute pictures today. She is a wonderful dog and great with Conner and Carli, she has never knocked them over but they get lots of kisses. Her and Conner have a special bond. Our son met her today for the first time, he came in from out of town for Easter. He is amazed at how Conner can tell her to sit and shake and she minds him so well!! She is a special girl and we are so blessed to have her. Camass has really been enjoying it! We also took him for a bath at a "pet wash" this weekend and of course he loved it. He now looks more handsome than ever. Now that Ben and I are both working during the day, Ben's mom stops over every afternoon to check on Cam and sometimes she brings their samoyed. She was telling us some stories over the weekend about their antics in the yard. She says they'll just run and run and run. Then she'll come inside to get the tennis ball and they'll both be waiting for her expectantly at the door. They don't have any problems with the dogs on either side of us. We have some new photos I have to take to get developed. We'll send them to you as soon as we can. Thanks again for giving us this wonderful dog. He gets showered with love every single day. Hey Mike -- I thought you'd enjoy this article I wrote about adopting Darci. It will be in the Lebanon Reporter this week. She's doing great, growing like a weed, and is already a member of the family. She's smart, happy, and very loving. She loves to play fetch and likes to play soccer with my son. Wheat Some very exciting news from the Wheat household: once again we are thrilled to have the pitter patter of little feet to enjoy. In fact, the pitter patter of four little feet. No, we didn't have twins. Nor did we adopt any. But we adopted a beautiful black Labrador Retriever puppy named Darci. And besides our smarmy cat, the rest of the family is proud. (The cat, in fact, thought of filing a grievance with both the Humane Society and PETA.) Last year, my family decided to move outside the city limits for some clean country living. Rather our own version of “Green Acres”, if you will. I now have a minibarn, a fence, and even a lawn tractor. It's not exactly a sprawling multi-acre complex where I could raise free-range chickens, but it's peaceful. We have good neighbors (including one we call “Crazy Uncle Bob”) and great sunsets. Earlier this year, the kids and I finally convinced (aka “strong armed”) my wife into the idea of introducing a dog to this beatific country setting. My wife has never been a “dog person” and I haven't had a dog since my childhood. But I've always wanted a Labrador Retriever, so after receiving the okay from the family congress, I set about researching Labs on the internet and by talking to other Lab owners. Some other friends of ours introduced us to the idea of Labrador rescue. In fact, they have rescued two of their own Labs. A Lab rescue (there are also other speciality Rescues that specialize in various other specific breeds) is a Rescue that takes in at risk, unwanted, and abandoned dogs and matches them with households for adoption. And when I say “adoption”, I mean “adoption”. The process is somewhat lengthy – sometimes up to several months. In our particular case, we wanted a puppy. Typically, puppies are extremely hard to find in rescues, since many people want pups and don't consider adopting adult pets. But I managed to find a cute little black Lab pup named Darci, who was fourteen weeks old at the time. She was living in Columbus, Indiana, at Happy Labs Rescue with a couple dedicated to finding homes for these dogs. Happy Labs Rescue is a non-for-profit rescue that takes in Labrador Retrievers and Lab mixes of all ages. Their dogs come from shelters, owners who no longer can, or will, provide for them and, all too often, strays that are never searched for. They evaluate each dog's health and temperament. The rescued Lab goes directly to a veterinarian for a spaying/neutering, vaccinations and any other necessary medical treatment. Darci came to Happy Labs from another rescue that didn't have room for her. I just happened upon her picture on a pet website and knew she was the one for us. I contacted Happy Labs via email. Mike, one of the coowners of the Happy Labs, sent me a somewhat lengthy questionnaire about our ability to provide a safe, nurturing environment for the pup. This included information about our previous and current pets, nearby veterinarians, and our home environment. I filled it out and we set up a visit to go see Darci. On a bright, sunny afternoon, we travelled nearly an hour to visit the pup. She was a happy, outgoing, and friendly girl, and the kids fell in love with her immediately. We spoke to the Happy Labs folks and arranged a “home visit” for them to inspect our house and yard, which took place the following week. In the end, we were approved to adopt Darci and she's now a member of the Wheat household. Even Caesar, the aforementioned smarmy gray cat, doesn't seem to mind too terribly much. The cat gave the new pup some important ground rules: “Look, I've been here for twelve years. I've survived three house moves and two babies. I've survived raiding coyotes and Indiana weather. Stay away from me, and I'll stay away from you. And don't go eating my food. And remember: when it comes to pet hierarchy – I'm Numero Uno.” Bringing Darci into our family has been a challenging and rewarding experience. Yes – we've had some trying times (like when she snatched a baby bird from the yard and ran from all attempts by human and other birds to retrieve it) but it's been a incredible experience for the whole family. Hello, I just wanted to send you a quick note telling you that everything is going great since I adopted Jack a few weeks ago. He was a little slow to get used to my routine, but now that he is on it, he and I do great together. I have only had one issue with him tearing things up around the house, but now I can leave him to roam around the entire house all day while I'm at work. He loves going for car rides with me and sleeping in my bed (he's an ENORMOUS bed hog!) He and I go for a half hour walk every night. He still doesn't like going in water and even hovers right next to me when I'm under an umbrella in the rain. I love him so much and I'm glad that I found you guys. Also, you left a bone (pig's bone, I think) with me when you dropped him off. Do you remember this? If so, do you know what brand the bone was? He loves chewing on it and it seems to last a while. I just wanted to tell you how happy I am with Lola! She is the sweetest dog! She is so well behaved and has such a fun personality. She would play ball non stop if I had nothing else to do! She started responding to her new name on the 3rd day. If she does something she is not supposed to, such as step out of my yard, I just say "no" once and she stops. She is very well trained. I don't know if that is due to Mary or her previous ownership. She is just the best dog. She is by me all the time. She also loves the back yard and chasing squirrels. She has become very active, compared to the first few days she was here and is very happy. She has gone on a couple car trips but due to heat they are very limited right now. I have started her on cosequin and the vet says she should improve dramatically.She will just need to be on it her whole life. I could not be happier with her and am lucky to have found her on line when I did. I hope that you keep up the rescue work so that many years from now when I need to replace her you will have another perfect match for me! I did send Mary a few pictures and a note. I told her I'd write again after Lola has been here for awhile. If you see Mary tell her we are very happy together and not to worry about her. Hey Mike, I just wanted to let you know that Duke is doing great! He is so much fun and we are so glad to have him as part of our family. Our fence is up and we have new trees in our yard for him to pee on! He just lays around inside and out like he owns the place.
