Choose a dog that fits your household’s lifestyle
• North Shore Animal League America suggests that all family members visit the shelter and interact with the dog they are considering. Bringing a pet into your home is a lifelong commitment. All household members should be involved in the decision.
• While at the shelter, keep in mind that it is a stressful place for any animal. Quite often, a dog's true colors won't show until he's away from other animals and the shelter environment. So even if you walk past a kennel with a dog that isn't looking for your attention, don't dismiss him. He may just be scared or lonely.
• Select a pet that suits your lifestyle. If everyone’s out of the house for long stretches of time, a puppy would not be a wise choice. Consider a more mature, housebroken dog. However, if you are available to properly train and socialize a puppy, it can be one of the most rewarding experiences you will ever have.
• More important than breed is activity level and temperament of the animal you bring into your home. For instance, active, on-the-go adopters may want to consider a lab mix, known for high-energy. If you enjoy long walks and jogging, a hound or shepherd mix might be the right fit for you.
Seek the help of an adoption counselor
• When you visit the shelter, begin by speaking with an adoption counselor about what your family is looking for in a pet. They work with the pets everyday and know more about each one than you could possibly learn in an afternoon.

• It is important for parents to realize that children can not be the sole caretakers of a pet. Young children typically lack the level of maturity required to care for a pet completely and older children may have many educational and social commitments.
• Discuss everyone’s role in caring for the new pet. For example, who will be responsible exercising, feeding and training the pet?
• Training your pet is key to the long term success of your relationship. A well-behaved dog provides companionship and joy, so North Shore Animal League America recommends that adopters seek training advice and classes.
