Pals For Paws strives to go "above and beyond" when caring for, socializing, and training our rescued pets. We are proud to say we care enough about our pets, that we welcome them into our homes as our own. Just like people, pets have unique preferences and personalities. Pals For Paws understands it is important to identify those qualities in order to match a rescued pet with the perfect home. We go the "extra mile", because we strongly feel these animals have suffered enough. Both you and they deserve their next home to be a "forever home"!

ADOPTION APPLICATION

If you'd like to adopt from us, please go to "http//www.palsforpawsinc.com" and fill out an adoption application, save it in Microsoft WORD, then E-mail it to us as an attachment. We'll review it, and contact you ASAP. If you are looking for a particular type of dog, or have special needs, please call us at 765-432-0226. We can help! Please note that we do not adopt to homes with unaltered animals or to those that plan on keeping the animal outside 24/7! It's cruel to deny them regular human contact!!!

NOTICE: Pals for Paws is not under any obligation to adopt any of our animals to any individual. We reserve the right to deny any application at our discretion.

"Pals for Paws" is a NO-KILL, ALL-BREED Animal Rescue organization (non-profit 501c3 ) powered by an all-volunteer staff who are passionate about improving the lives of dogs and cats in our community. We are a group of caring individuals who devote our time to help homeless, abandoned, or abused pets find loving "forever-homes", and who work toward fulfilling...

OUR MISSION: to significantly reduce, and eventually eliminate pet euthanization and homelessness due to irresponsible and/or uneducated owners through a combination of: (1) a low-cost spay/neuter program, (2) regularly scheduled adoption events supported by local businesses, (3) a well-trained, compassionate foster-home network, and (4) effective public awareness and education activities.

Ten Commandments for Pet Owners

1. My life is likely to last 10 to 15 years. Any separation from you will be very painful.
2. Give me time to understand what you want from me. Do not break my spirit with your temper, though I will always forgive you. Your patience and understanding will teach me more quickly those things you want me to learn.
3. Treat me kindly, my beloved friend, for no heart in all the world is more grateful for your kindness than mine. Don't be angry with me for long, and don't lock me up as punishment. After all, you have your job, your friends, your entertainment. I have only you.
4. Speak to me often. Even if I don't understand all your words, I understand your voice when it's speaking to me. Your voice is the sweetest sound I ever hear, as you must know by my enthusiastic excitement when your footsteps fall upon my waiting ear.
5. Please take me inside when it's cold and wet. I'm a domestic animal and no longer am accustomed to the bitter elements. I ask for little more than your gentle hands petting me.
6. Keep my bowl filled with clean water; I cannot tell you when I'm thirsty. Feed me good food so that I may stay well, to romp and play and do your bidding, to be by your side, and stand ready, willing and able to share with you my life, for that is what I live for. However you treat me, I'll never forget it.
7. Don't hit me. Remember, I have teeth that could easily crush the bones in your hand, but I choose not to bite you.
8. Before you scold me for being lazy or uncooperative, ask yourself if something might be bothering me. Perhaps I am not getting the right food, I've been out in the sun too long, or my heart is getting old and weak.
9. Take care of me when I get old. You will grow old, too.
10. When I am very old, when I no longer enjoy good health, please do not make heroic efforts to keep me going. I am not having fun. Just see to it that my trusting life is taken gently. And be with me on that difficult journey when it is time to say "goodbye". Never say, "I can't bear to watch." Everything is easier for me when you are there. I will leave this earth knowing with my last breath that my fate was always safest in your hands. Remember - I love you.

A NOTE ABOUT OUR ADOPTION FEE

Many people have been asking us:
"WHY IS YOUR ADOPTION FEE HIGHER THAN SOME OTHER RESCUE GROUPS?".

The answer is:
WE ARE AN ALL-VOLUNTEER RESCUE GROUP THAT RECEIVES NO FUNDING!

Not even the president receives compensation!

Our adoption fees help us recover only some of the expenses we face while caring for rescued animals. . . . "Buddy Van" gasoline, vet checkups, worming, shots, spay/neuter surgery, crates, outdoor kennels, food, collars, leashes, and much more. The extra money we need comes from: (1) donations by local businesses and individuals, (2) fundraising events, and (3) the personal generosity of our volunteers.

THANKS FOR YOUR UNDERSTANDING !

A HEARTBREAKING STATE OF AFFAIRS

STARTLING STATISTICS FROM THE HUMANE SOCIETY. . .

7 TO 8 MILLION DOGS AND CATS WIND UP IN SHELTERS EACH YEAR.
SHELTERS KILL MORE THAN 75% OF THOSE "INMATES".
ONLY ABOUT 13% ARE LUCKY ENOUGH TO BE ADOPTED.

PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE...

SPAY / NEUTER YOUR PET
TO HELP STOP THIS SENSELESS WASTE OF LIFE!!!

Also... Please help save lives by ADOPTING a trained, well-adjusted, well-mannered dog from our rescue group.
NEVER buy from pet stores, because that supports the breeding HORROR known as PUPPY MILLS.
Thanks once again for your support!

CAN I HELP WITHOUT SPENDING MONEY???

Here's a great way to spare a cat or dog from euthanasia without making a lifetime commitment: BE A FOSTER PARENT!

There are few things more rewarding than giving a homeless pet a warm loving home while they're in a transition period. Usually, a pet in foster care has a "leg up" on being adopted because more behavioral information is available before placing them with forever families. In other words, we can more closely match them with a "forever home", significantly reducing their chances of rejection! Also, they receive more attention, socialization, and training while in foster care. As a result, they adapt to their new "forever family" with minimum fuss! In addition, it's much easier on them -- emotionally speaking -- than living in a shelter environment. That's because it allows them to avoid developing behavioral problems which reduce their chance of rejection.

If we provide food and medical, could you provide love and attention for one of our rescued pets??? Please email us at palsforpawshc@aol.com , or call (765)432-0226 if you are interested in becoming a foster parent for one of these darlings.

Another way you can help is to donate items you no longer want, such as:
Collars And Leashes
Dog food
New Or Used Dog Crates
Paper Towels
Floor Cleaner
Dog Treats
Kitty Litter
Cat/Kitten food
Cat Treats
New Or Used (but clean) Dog Beds
Bones Or Rawhide Chews For Dogs
Dog and Cat Grooming Supplies (shampoo, brushes, etc.)
Wal-Mart (or the like) Bags
Scrub Brushes
Kennel-Sol
Bleach
Dog Dishes
Used, but clean, (or new!) Blankets, Sheets, and Towels
Wal-Mart, Petco, Pet Supplies Plus gift cards

Contact us if you would like to donate supplies! Thanks in advance! :o)

DO YOU NEED TO GET RID OF YOUR PET?

Please surrender your pet to an animal rescue, or to your local Humane Society. Most animal rescues typically have a NO-KILL philosophy, but so do a few Humane Societies. If in doubt, please ask.

Pals for Paws is a NO-KILL, ALL-BREED dog rescue. We do not have an actual building we can use as a shelter, so the number of pets we can care for is limited to the number of foster homes we have. BUT... we can help in other ways! For starters, we can work with you to help find your pet a truly GOOD home, NOT JUST ANY home. We'll help create a "sales pitch" and fashion flattering photos. Then we'll advertise your pet to a wide audience both on the web, and in our community. We also invite and encourage you to attend our local adoption events with your pet. These events increase your pet's exposure, and significantly raise their chances for adoption. The reason they work is because of the high traffic they generate, and because people experience your pet's character first hand. "A picture is worth a thousand words!"

PLEASE DO NOT SET YOUR DOG LOOSE UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES! Aside from potentially contributing to the pet overpopulation problem... DOGS ARE SOCIAL BEINGS WITH NEAR-HUMAN EMOTIONS. Think of how your children would feel, and even survive, if they were dumped in a field somewhere. Your abandoned dog feels no better. In fact, after being dumped, your dog will stay in that area and regularly return to the exact spot where you left them, and wait for you to return. It will do this while it slowly starves to death, or someone rescues it, because it cannot learn how to take care of itself after living in your home. It is a heart-wrenching scene to witness, and a heartless way to treat your dog.

ARE YOU READY TO OWN OR ADOPT A PET?

Wonderful! We want our pets to go to the best possible homes, where love and care are abundant. So before commitng to adopt remember that: A PET IS A COMPANION FOR LIFE! Please be sure that the time is right to bring a new friend into the family. If you're expecting a baby, it's probably not a great time to adopt a puppy or high energy dog. If you love cats but your significant-other hates them, it would be unfair to the cat and to your partner to bring one into the family. We prefer you adopt, but we also want to make sure it's a choice you can live with for the rest of your four-legged companion's life.

We cannot stress this enough... BRINGING A DOG INTO YOUR FAMILY SHOULD NOT BE TAKEN LIGHTLY. IT'S NOT THE SAME AS KEEPING A TURTLE OR A GOLDFISH!!! BE PREPARED TO PROVIDE SUFFICIENT ATTENTION AND PROPER TRAINING FOR THE LIFE OF THE ANIMAL (up to 16 years for dogs). If you do not prepare yourself and/or your family for a new dog, it is the animal who ultimately suffers. Statistics show that most dogs are abandoned because of behavior problems. Please take the time to think things over and ask yourself:

THE DECISIONS YOU MAKE NOW WILL AFFECT YOU FOR A LONG TIME TO COME.

SO. . . WHICH BREED IS RIGHT FOR ME?FOR A LIFE OF HARMONY AND MUTUALLY REWARDING COMPANIONSHIP, IT IS CRUCIAL FOR YOUR LIFESTYLE TO MATCH THAT OF YOUR CHOSEN BREED'S PERSONALITY TRAITS AND BEHAVIORAL CHARACTERISTICS. A poor match guarantees frustration, dissatisfaction, and ultimately dooms the innocent pet to neglect, abandonment, and oftentimes... death.

Things I Should Learn From My Dog (by Dawn)

I'm a dog lover. I don't think it is an accident that "dog" is "god " spelled backward. I think my dog's actions are illustrations of living in a God like way. And not just my dog, i learn from all kinds of dogs during my excursions with her.

I Can Make A Difference - A Reflection of Love

I looked at all the caged animals in the shelter... cast-offs of human society. I saw in their eyes: LOVE & HOPE, FEAR & DREAD, SADNESS & BETRAYAL. I was heartbroken and infuriated. GOD, this is terrible! Why don't you do something?" I asked. GOD was silent for a moment, and then spoke softly, "I have done something... I created you"!

Man's Best Friend - Ode to the Canine

He is your friend, your partner, your defender, your dog. You are his life, his love, his leader. He will be yours, faithful and true, to the last beat of his heart. You owe it to him to be worthy of such devotion.

Rescue Me - A Dog's Prayer

Rescue me not only with your hands, but also with your heart.
I will respond to you.
Rescue me not out of pity but out of love.
I will love you back.
Rescue me not with self-righteousness but with compassion.
I will learn what you teach.
Rescue me not because of my past but because of my future.
I will relax and enjoy.
Rescue me not simply to save me but to give me a new life.
I will appreciate your gift.
Rescue me not only with a firm hand but with tolerance and patience.
I will please you.
Rescue me not only because of who I am but who I'm to become.
I will grow and mature.
Rescue me not to revere yourself to others but because you want me.
I will never let you down.
Rescue me not with a hidden agenda but with a desire to teach me to trust.
I will be loyal and true.
Rescue me not to be chained or to fight but to be your companion.
I will stand by your side.
Rescue me not to replace one you've lost but to soothe your spirit.
I will cherish you.
Rescue me not to be your pet but to be your friend.
I will give you unconditional love.
Rescue me with true love in your heart and
I will give you these things all the days of my life.
