Rescue Notes

The mission of Indiana Sheltie Rescue, Inc. is to find loving and responsible new owners for homeless Shetland Sheepdogs (Shelties). Since our founding in 1999, ISR has taken in over 480 shelties, and it is not unusual for us to have 20 to 25 dogs of all ages, sizes, and colors in our program at any one time. All of our Shelties are fostered in private homes. Each dog is spayed or neutered, given necessary medical care, brought up to date on vaccinations, and microchipped.

Our hope is that you would wish to open your home and your heart to a sheltie in need. Although we do commonly have young dogs available, many of our dogs are middle-aged or older. These sweet dogs still have so much love to give. They will enrich your life and bring joy to your household: all they need is a chance.

Please visit our website, www.indianasheltierescue.org, if you wish to fill out an adoption application, become a volunteer or foster parent, buy any of our fundraising items, or simply learn more about our program. There are so many ways you can help.

Who We Are

Indiana Sheltie Rescue, Inc. is a non-profit corporation consisting of a small group of volunteers who have come together to help homeless shelties. We are always looking for additional volunteers, and capable and loving foster homes to offer a temporary safe haven to Shetland Sheepdogs. Our shelties make their way into our program as owner surrenders, shelter dogs, or are found as strays by caring individuals. All shelties are first placed in foster homes to be evaluated for their health and temperament and receive medical care.

Because we are a small group of volunteers, most of our work is done within the borders of Indiana. Our number one concern is the future and safety of our rescued shelties and we are anxious to hear from you if you think our program is appropriate for you!

Adopting a Friend

All adoptive homes are carefully screened to ensure the best possible match. Our adoption fee is $175, which includes medical care, spaying or neutering, all vaccines, and heartworm prevention. The adoption fee for dogs over 10 is reduced to $50 in an effort not to lessen their value but to increase interest in adopting senior dogs. Each adopter is required to fill out an application, available either online or by snail mail. Each adopter must also have a home visit. We then work to match the right dog to the right home situation in an effort to find a permanent home for each sheltie for the remainder of his or her life. If you see one of our dogs that particularly appeals to you, please feel free to apply for that dog (although the pre-adoptive procedures still need to be completed). We also have an adoption contract to be signed before the adoption is complete, at which time you receive copies of all medical records. Should something fail with the adoption after all this effort, the sheltie must be returned to Indiana Sheltie Rescue.
