MISSION STATEMENT

"To advance and support the cause of adequate domestic animal care and to develop and carry on domestic animal care, education programs and courses in order to prevent cruelty to animals and animal over population, provide and arrange for shelter and homes for domestic animals when possible and provide relief of suffering among domestic animals. Preventing over population does include the use of euthanasia when necessary and the operation of an animal shelter that does practice the use of euthanasia and is a temporary housing facility for animals and is not a life long sanctuary."

COUNTY-WIDE ANIMAL ORDINANCE FINALLY PASSED!

We are proud to announce that after over a year of diligently working with local government, and numerous changes, we've finally been successful in implementing an ordinance protecting our community's pets. At the November 17, 2005 meeting of Perry County's commissioners, an ordinance requiring the humane treatment of animals and prohibiting the keeping of dangerous animals was passed.
The ordinance requires county residents to provide adequate treatment, food, water, shelter and medical care to their dogs and cats, and to ensure the public is protected from them. Abandonment, injurious trapping and poisoning of animals are prohibited, as is leaving animals in vehicles if it could constitute a health hazard.
Dangerous animals are defined by the ordinance as those that have bitten or attacked a person or another animal at least once within the past year or could not be controlled during an attack.
The ordinance authorizes the county's shelter manager to destroy animals deemed dangerous, but provides for an appeal process through the shelter's board of directors.
We will include the ordinance, in its entirety, as soon as we get a copy of the final wording from our board president.

ADOPTING FROM US

We accept animals from Perry County residents only. However, anyone can adopt from us. PCAS requires a personal visit to the shelter facility for any adoption, unless prior arrangements are made. An interview with staff will be conducted when you visit. We have a strict contract that must be signed and you must provide a current driver's license. PCAS has the right to refuse adoption for any reason. Please visit the shelter and speak with staff for more information on our adoption policies. Please visit our "Adoptable Pets" page to see our pets up for adoption.

Our adoption fees provide the following:
Spay / Neuter Surgery (done by Dr. Kevin Kennedy or Dr. Bill Schoene)
Rabies Vaccine
Wormings
ALL Feline or Canine vaccines up-to-date
Heartworm Test (dogs only)
Kennel cough vaccine (dogs only)

Most of our adult dogs are kennel trained and cats litterbox trained.
We work with puppies as time permits & the kittens gradually learn.

WHO WE ARE

The Perry County Animal Shelter, Inc. is a state of the art privately owned shelter located in Perry County, Indiana. We accept surrenders from Perry County only, but allow adoptions from anywhere. The Board of Directors took control of the facility on July 1, 2004 & has made vast improvements since then, including the construction of a new facility.
Our new facility has 13 isolation kennels and 12 adoption kennels. We have separate isolations for kittens, cats, and puppies. We have open habitat adoption areas for cats and kittens. The facility was designed for maximum disease control, including 3 seperate heating, cooling, and ventilation zones between the isolation and adoption areas. Strict protocols are implemented to prevent spread of any disease.

Lost and Found

The PCAS offers a lost and found service to the community for their pets. By giving the community a place to call when they have found or lost a pet, the PCAS is often able to reunite lost animals with their owners. Through this record they are able to stress the importance to these owners to always keep a collar and identification tag on their animals. In addition, this service allows the shelter to track any obvious patterns of missing dogs. This helps if it is believed any animal theft rings are in the area. Please call the shelter to report a missing or found animal.
Volunteer Opportunities
The Perry County Animal Shelter is a wonderful place to volunteer. All PCAS volunteers go through a brief volunteer orientation to better understand the needs of the shelter and how they can help. Volunteer opportunities include walking the larger kennel dogs, socializing with the puppies and kittens, assisting in daily chores, bathing and grooming animals. Volunteers also play a vital part in PCAS fund-raisers and community events. Every PCAS volunteer makes life a little easier for the staff and animals.

We welcome all ages. Teens must have written consent from their guardians. Younger children (under age 13) must be accompanied by a parent when volunteering at the shelter. All volunteers must sign a waiver.

If you would like to volunteer, please send an e-mail to: pcasinc@psci.net or call (812) 547-6381 to make arrangements. We promise you will get lots of kisses and tail wags in return.

Sponsor A Shelter Animal

If you would like to donate part or all of the adoption fee or medical treatment for one of our pets, contact the shelter by email. Help find forever homes for our dogs and cats by sponsoring them. Even if you can't adopt a pet, you can help a pet have a better chance at finding someone who can. Your contribution could help save a life.

Foster Care

This program requires you to open your heart and home to an animal or litter in need. The PCAS foster care volunteers will take orphaned animals into their homes who may need extra care and socialization in order to be brought back into the shelter to go up for adoption. Please call the PCAS if you are interested in becoming a foster parent.
