ADOPTION POLICIES

All our pets are spayed/ neutered, vaccinated and wormed prior to adoption. Dogs are also heartworm tested and started on prevantative if negative.

We require a vet reference and a personal reference, plus a completed adoption application. We do check these references, and will not let our animals go to any homes we feel are not in their best interest.

We charge a variable adoption fee for our pets. Please see each listing for fee, or ask if one is not stated.

ABOUT US

The Jay County Humane Society is a limited admissions shelter committed to finding good homes for stray, abandoned, mis-treated and
unwanted animals.
We are a 501(c)3 non-profit organization which relies solely on membership fees, fund raisers and the generous contributions from our community.
No donation is too small, and ALL donations are greatly appreciated!
If you are interested in helping out, cleaning supplies, animal care products and dry puppy/ kitten food are needed at all times.

LOW COST SPAY/NEUTER

We now host a transport to a low-cost spay/ neuter clinic on the second Tuesday of each month.
Your pet will be safely transported to the HOPE Spay/ Neuter Clinic in Fort Wayne and returned to you the following day.
They charge about half what most vets charge.

VISIT US!

From HWY 27, turn west on 7th St. (at the southside Circle K) and go to Blaine Pike. Turn left on Blaine (south) and go to Bittersweet. Turn left on Bittersweet (east). Turn right on Shadeland and follow the signs.

From HWY 67, turn east onto Tyson Road, (just east of the High School). Take Tyson Road (which turns into Water St.) to Blaine Pike. Turn right onto Blaine and go south to Bittersweet Lane. Turn Left onto Bittersweet.
Turn Right onto Shadeland and follow the signs.

Shadeland does NOT show on Map Quest or many GPS's, so please search for 101 Bittersweet if using them.

 

LOST & FOUND

If you've lost or found a pet, the following tips can help you to find the pet or owner:

1. Call the local radio Station, WPGW, at (260) 726-8780 to advertise on the Second Hand Store (it's free).
Also, be sure to listen to the Second Hand Store or have someone listen for you, to see if someone has lost or found the pet.
The show is aired on 100.9 FM or 1440 AM each weekday morning, starting around 9:15.
It is also aired each weeknight around 5:45, and on Saturday mornings around 8:45.
Many times I have heard an animal advertised as lost, and later in the show an animal matching that description as found.
Sometimes these ads go on for days, because neither person is actually listening to the show!

2. Call the Jay County Humane Society at (260) 726-6339. We receive lots of calls on lost and found pets, and try to match them up as best we can.
We also have microchip scanners, to see if found pets have been microchipped.

3. Call the Jay County Animal Control to see if the pet has been picked up, or to let them know you are missing your pet or have found one.
That number is (260) 726-4365. You also should go out there and look for yourself.
Sometimes your description of an animal and their perception is very different, so they might not think it is there when it really is.
They have microchip scanners as well.


4. Be sure to check our message board here:

6. Call all the vets in the area. If a lost pet is hurt, it may end up at the vet's office. If you've found a pet, they may recognize it if it's a patient of
theirs. And if the pet is microchipped, they have scanners to read the information from the chip.

7. Ask your neighbors, especially children. Lots of people see stray pets and leave them alone, but could tell you where they saw it.
Kids can be especially helpful when it comes to animals, as most children love them, pay attention to where they see them, and like to help!

8. Make posters, with a picture if possible. You can get cheap reprints at CVS or Wal Mart, even without a negative, and a good, clear picture is much more help than any description. Post them everywhere, including light poles in your neighborhood, on the Marsh bulletin board, at the vet's office, on the True Value bulletin board, at the Jay County Humane Society, and at Jay County Animal Control.



PREVENTIVE MEASURES:

Make sure your dog is always wearing a collar with ID on it. Rabies tags can usually be used to trace an owner.
If your pet is 6 months or over, they are required by state law to have and to wear their rabies tag.
The best tag to have is a personalized one with your name, address and phone number on it.
You can get them for very little money on ebay, or have one printed on the machine at Wal Mart.


When you get a new pet, always be sure to take several good, clear pictures from all angles.
These can be used later to identify the pet if it is lost or stolen.

You can also get your dog or cat microchipped.
Our local veterinarians will do microchipping, and all area shelters and veterinarians now have microchip scanners.

Tattoos are very hard to trace, so they are not recommended.
