Our Mission

To provide temporary shelter for stray and unwanted dogs and cats until the owner can be found or they are adopted by responsible owners.

t>

The Delaware County SPCA was founded in 1888 and continues to be the oldest, self-sustaining organization in Delaware County Indiana strictly devoted and dedicated to the welfare and health of dogs and cats and educating their owners and other individuals about responsible pet care.

Our Dog-Gone History

Built in 1929, our present shelter was given to the Humane Society of Delaware County by Mrs. William C. Ball, in honor of Zula Valentine and her tireless dedication and humanitarian efforts on behalf of animals. The Ball family has long been recognized in the community for their philanthropy. In the 1970s, the SPCA and the Delaware County Humane Society came together as one to form the organization as it is known today,

"The SPCA Humane Society of Delaware County"

In 1998, the Board of Directors changed the face of humane care of shelter animals by declaring the shelter a "no-kill" facility. The shelter building had previously been used as the city animal shelter. It was at this point in time, the SPCA/Humane Society took over the shelter building.

Caring for the Animals

All animals are vaccinated/wormed when they arrive at the facility. The shelter has a microchip reader and the staff is always hopeful that an incoming lost animal has a microchip with up-to-date contact information for the owner. Sheltered animals receive a high quality diet during their stay as well as their own collar and ID tag.

SPCA Adoption Policy

All potential animals adopters must wait 24 hours before bringing their new pet home. This allows a potential adopter a chance to obtain the necessary items to make their house or apartment a home for their new pet. This should include a leash, pet food, food and water dishes, bedding, a crate if needed, and of course, toys!

The shelter does sell leashes and lightweight cardboard travel crates for a nominal fee.

This waiting period also allows shelter staff to check potential adopter's references and may include a home visit. It's very important to arrange for your new pet to see their veterinarian as soon as possible after finalizing the adoption. Although we do our best to evaluate each animal's health and temperament when they arrive, we are unable to guarantee either. Many of our dogs and cats have unknown heritages. We sometimes will get a pure-bred animal that is an owner turn-in.

Let's Talk About Education

If individuals were properly educated, there would be no need for prosecution.

Our animals are the lucky ones. Everyday many dogs and cats are euthanized because they don't have a home. Be a responsible pet owner and spay or neuter your pets.

Alarming Fact of Life (and Death!)

Did you know that in 2004, over 3 million lost and unwanted dogs and cats were euthanized in U.S. animal shelters, a rate of one animal every nine seconds?

We have a large number of adult cats, kittens and dogs who need forever homes. Won't you give adopting a shelter animal a try? They have lots of love to give!

PLEASE DON'T BREED OR BUY WHILE SHELTER ANIMALS DIE!

More on Education

The SPCA Humane Society Education Center is reaching out to children and adults in the community by teaching responsible pet care. We have books, brochures, games, videos, and other activities for use during visits to the shelter. We are VERY proud of this gift to the community and hope you will utilize it. Why not stop in some afternoon with your family and learn something new about taking care of your favorite dog or cat? We love having visitors!

We Need You As A Volunteer

We are always in need of volunteers, either individuals or groups to socialize our animals. This includes walking dogs, playing with the kittens or holding a frightened newcomer. If you have a green thumb or like to garden, like to mow, enjoy painting, or can help with dog training, we can use your talents!

We are a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization and are able to continue caring for animals and educating the public because of the generosity of like-minded people like you donating money to the SPCA/Humane Society. We receive no tax revenue for our shelter and exist solely on donations and bequests. It is our hope that you will find it in your heart to make a donation to our facility. All donations are tax-deductible. We are happy to provide a receipt at your request.

PLEASE REMEMBER THE SPCA HUMANE SOCIETY IN YOUR WILL!
