The Humane Society for Hamilton County is a receiving facility and shelter for the lost, homeless, relinquished or neglected companion animals. (We receive animals relinquished by their owners, and those picked up by Animal Control as "strays".) We provide adoption programs to find ALL of these deserving animals new homes, and we also provide education programs for the community.
Adopting a Friend for Life
The Humane Society for Hamilton County wants to see our animals go to loving, permanent homes. Our staff is here to answer as many questions as they can to help match your family up with a pet that will be suited to your lifestyle. We do all we can to find the animals homes, but we also want them to be permanent, so that the pets AND the new families are all happy! We always try to remind people that adopting a pet is a big decision that should be made by the entire family. Remember, pets are not disposable, they are a "LIFETIME COMMITMENT".
Our adoption fees range from $45.00 to $250.00 depending on the age, size and breed of the animal. Please note that some pets may have an increased adoption fee if they are part of our Survivor Program, while others may have a discounted fee if they have been at the shelter for an extended period of time or have special medical needs.
Please note we do offer discounts on our adoptions fees in many cases depending on how long the animal has been at the shelter, and we usually feature a monthly adoption special.
Included in fees are: First round vaccinations and worming; Heartworm test (dogs); Feline Leukemia/FIV test (cats); Free basic exam at participating vets; Spay/Neuter; Microchip with National
registration; "Revolution" application.
Please note...we do not generally put young puppies or kittens on this website, because they are usually adopted so quickly, it would be very difficult to keep that part of the list current! Please call to ask about young puppies or kittens if that is what you are interested in adopting.
Hold Process Information
We do offer potential adopters the option to place a hold on a pet so the required steps can all be met and you have time to think through your decision. Holds are effective until the next day at 5pm. Because the shelter is closed to the public on Wednesdays, holds placed on Tuesday will be good until 5pm on Thursday. The hold fee is $35 and is non-refundable.
Hold fees will go toward the adoption fee upon approval of your application or may be put towards another animal if adopted that same day.
Please be considerate to the animal you’ve placed on hold and contact the shelter if you know you will not be returning for the animal. Every moment an animal is on hold is an opportunity that someone else may have taken them home.
Volunteering includes socializing with the animals, walking dogs, grooming, office work, etc. The more attention the animals are given, the happier they are, and the better thier appearance. Volunteers must be at least 16 years of age and must go through a volunteer orientation and then specific training. We also need foster homes for animals that are recovering from an illness or injury, or for litters of puppies or kittens while they are nursing until they are old enough to come back to the shelter to be put up for adoption. Please stop by to pick up an application, or you can submit one online at www.hamiltonhumane.com (Please specify which type - animal socializing or foster care or both!)
