Who I Am

I am the Animal Control Officer for Chester IL.

My goal as animal control is to get every dog that passes through the Chester Kennels and does not get reclaimed a new life. These are the unwanted, unloved, underdogs...and I have always been a fan of the underdog. These are the the dogs that have strayed, but no one cares enough to look for them. These are the dumped dogs, the ones that when they are too old, too big, too loud, too hyper, shed too much, pee too much, chew too much...or any other reason their owner decides on, get packed in the car driven to a remote location and thrown out. They are scared, lost, and unsure of what to do. They watch their beloved master drive away, and then wonder why...how do I get back to them...where should I go, and now what do I do.

What is the first thing they all do...look for Humans. They look for one of us to help them. They are sure that we will be happy to see them, that we will take them in and hold them and love them. It is rarely the case. Instead many times we yell at them, throw things at them, frightening them even more and let them know they are not wanted, and for sure not here! We never give another thought as to if that dog has a place to go, or when is the last time it ate, or had a drink, is it cold, or scared...as long as it is not at my house, because I don't want it!

I'VE DONE THAT! I'VE BEEN THAT PERSON! For no other reason than...I just didn't know. I had never really thought about it. My eyes have been opened to the horrors these beautiful unwanted dogs suffer. They are NOT unwanted, and unloved...I WANT them, I LOVE them. I want to change their lives, and in turn they change my world. They make me a better person. I am thankful for every one that has passed through my hands.

I never look at the dogs that go to the kennels, no matter how horrible they have had it, and think how sad. I hold each one and look into their eyes and I tell them, "Honey it is time to celebrate, you are one of the lucky ones. Your whole world has just begun, and I promise you I will help you find a home that wants you and loves you, and where you will only know happiness." These dogs know...they may not know my words, but they know. I work with a network of no kill shelters that help me get these dogs into homes where they will be loved and cared for the rest of their lives. There are transports that go all over the United States. Dogs from the Chester Kennels have gone to Wisconsin, California, Chicago, and the East Coast. Dogs have been flown from the Sparta Air Port, by Pilots that volunteer to take them. It is amazing to see all the people that step up to make a difference. When the dogs leave the kennel, I know they will be getting all the love and attention I give them, on a daily basis, forever. Each one that goes takes a little part of my heart with them, but in turn they leave me with joy and the peace that their life HAS been changed, I am so blessed to be a part of this. It really is a beautiful life.

There are ways you can help from walking dogs, to updating web sites. You can help by transporting a dog, or helping with a fund raiser. If you would like to see how to help make a difference email
