Mini Aussie Rescue & Support, Inc.
WHO WE ARE
MARS is the first rescue group devoted exclusively to Miniature Australian Shepherds. Our goal is caring for, evaluating, and finding new homes for Mini Aussies in need and educating people about these wonderful dogs. MARS assists Mini Aussies of all ages, large and small. We are an all-volunteer organization that relies on donations and fund-raising to support our efforts.

IL/IN/MO/KY/TN/OK FOSTER HOMES DESPERATELY NEEDED!
People often write asking "If you need fosters so badly, where are all the dogs that need homes?"
While it may not seem as though there are a lot of available dogs we can't take dogs if we don’t have somewhere to house them. Right now the State of Illinois has TWO active Foster Homes for Minis!! There is ONE in Michigan, NONE in Indiana and TN, ONE in MO, One in OK.
These are great little dogs that deserve to spend time in Happy Foster Homes while waiting for their new "Forever Families". Fostering is a great way to meet dogs and see how they work with your family - many fosters become family members, whether by accident or design.
As MARS is a National Breed Specialty Rescue we’d be happy to add Foster Homes anywhere in the country. We are especially needy in the Pacific Northwest and South Eastern states. The abandoned Mini population in those areas seem to be the greatest.
If you or anyone you know could foster a dog, even for just a few days in an emergency situation, or provide any type of support - please email
***If you ever hear of a Mini Aussie needing to be rescued, please email MARS at

Is a Mini Aussie Right for You?
Mini Aussies are exploding in popularity as more people discover these wonderful dogs. But they're not for everybody. And since Mini Aussies can live 12 to15 years, getting a Mini Aussie is not a decision to be taken lightly. Many of our dogs arrive due to owner relinquishment caused by a misunderstanding of general Aussie temperament.
As with any herding breed placement, it's important to carefully match the energy level of each Miniature Australian Shepherd with the right home. While some Mini Aussies might live comfortably in an apartment, for example, many will be too active for that environment and require much more room to exercise.
ALL Australian Shepherds, regardless of size, are HERDING dogs. As such, many have a strong herding tendency. They WILL herd anything - including children! If we had a nickel for every Mini sent to a shelter for chasing and nipping the children we could cut our fundraising by 80%. Most Minis require at least weekly brushing. And because of their coat and shedding, they are not recommended for people allergic to dog fur and dander.
Mini Aussies can be reserved with strangers, it helps to socialize them by exposing them to a variety of people and outside experiences while young. Mini Aussies are extremely loving and devoted to their families, incredibly smart, and can do well with children and other pets, when properly socialized. A Mini Aussie will want to be an active part of your life. They're often called "velcro dogs" because they follow you everywhere. While comfortable outside in many climates, they are not kennel dogs as isolation from humans negatively affects their personalities. As with any breed choice, PLEASE be sure to read and understand the literature regarding the dog's behavior and purpose before you bring one home! But, if you can provide lots of time, exercise, training and love, a Mini Aussie might be the right dog for you!
Additionally, we will NOT adopt to a home with an Underground Electric Fence. The negative and lasting effects of the shock collar on dogs as intelligent and social as Aussies has resulted in aggressive behavior and subsequently the need to Put Dogs Down! I have met MORE than one damaged animal. It is a difficult and time consuming business to rehabilitate an Aussie once it develops this type of aggression. Most rescues will not or can not take an aggressive dog for any reason and it will end up in a shelter or Animal Control - for an Aussie this is a Death Sentence!!! We say "Just Don't Use One" - perhaps your dog won't be affected, but be prepared for the consequences if it is!!!
Adopting a friend
Individuals or families wishing to adopt a MARS dog should download an Adopter Packet from our website www.miniaussierescue.org.
Once the completed Adopter Packet forms have been submitted, we will try to match you with the best dog for your home or contact you when one is available.
If interested in a specific dog you MUST complete the Adopter Packet forms before receiving specific information about that dog. You will not be considered for any dog before we have your completed forms, and any delay in receipt may result in the placement of that dog with another.
When your Adopter Packet forms have been processed, MARS will discuss your dog wishes with you. We consider adoption requests in the order they are received, but our priority is placing each dog with the person or family who is the best match for that dog. Because of this, it is possible someone submitting an adoption request after yours could be a better match for a dog in which you are interested. Please be patient and keep us informed if your plans change.
These dogs have distinctively different personalities and energy levels which are not evident by their looks in pictures! Every dog is an individual. If your desire is a specific color dog you may be waiting a long time, because the color does not dictate the personality or the suitability for your situation..

Since we are a nationwide rescue organization with no permanent facilities, we have foster homes all over the United States. We work very hard to place our dogs with the best match for them, regardless of the location.
