Shelter News

Who We Are

We are a small county shelter with one full time Animal Control Officer and a handful of very dedicated volunteers. We are licensed by the State of Illinois Department of Agriculture. Our shelter is small and cannot hold many animals. We hold strays for seven days to give owners time to locate and retrieve their lost pets. Owner surrenders are held at the discretion of the Animal Control Officer. Hundreds of animals come to our shelter each year. Every opportunity is made to find homes for the animals, however, if homes cannot be found, the animals can be euthanized. The animals at the shelter deserve a second chance and a loving home! Our staff is dedicated to saving as many animals as possible. We have made great progress in decreasing euthanasia numbers and increasing adoptions. We have caring, loving, and dedicated volunteers that provide needed attention to the animals at the shelter. The animals are given high quality food, a bath, water, veterinary care, and lots of TLC.

Adopting an Animal

If you are interested in adopting an animal, please contact the Wabash County Animal Shelter to receive an adoption screening form. An adoption screening form must be completed to help with matching the right pet to the right family. Please have vet reference, landlord contacts, and employer information available. The adopting individual will sign a contract stating that animal will be spayed/neutered, and that required vaccinations will be obtained. The county collects $14 from each adoption, and an additional donation of $61 is assessed for dogs and cats that have been vaccinated and spayed/neutered. Microchipping is available with an additional fee. The donated funds will be used to cover some of the cost of vaccinations and spay/neuter. Adoptions will be approved at the discretion of the shelter staff.

Volunteer Opportunities

We are always in need of volunteers to help our animals. Help is needed to walk dogs, clean kennels and cages, fold laundry, clean dishes, foster animals, fundraise, and so much more. If you would like to be a part of our organization or have any questions about volunteer opportunites, please call the Wabash County Animal Shelter. All help is needed!

Sponsor an Animal

To continue our mission and provide the animals with the care they need, we need funds to help pay for vaccinations, worming, spay/neuter, heartworm and flea prevention, food, and any other medical need. Please help save the life of a precious and innocent animal by contributing towards their care.

Donations can be made payable to the Wabash County Animal Shelter Buddies and mailed to the Wabash County Animal Shelter Buddies at 11336 N. 1550 Blvd., Mt. Carmel, Illinois 62863. Please make note of the pet you would like to sponsor and help save while they find a forever home. You can also click the "Sponsor Me" button on the animal's biography to make your donation online. Every amount can help save a life!
