Adopting a Special Needs Cat....We want a home with you !!

The pets at Happy Hearts live very normal lives. Some cats may require special diets and daily medicine and others do not. They can be adopted to responsible households who understand their individual needs. NOTE: Cats with Feline Leukemia may only be adopted to non-cat households. To apply for one of these lovable pets for your home, contact us for an adoption application. Adoption fees vary but typically $50 is requested. This donation/fee includes altering and all shots. The adoption fees are also used to offset the costs of medicine and food that is needed to care for those cats who are unable to be adopted.

FIV (Feline Immunodeficiency Virus)

FIV is a virus that weakens the immune system of cats only. It is often referred to as feline AIDS. FIV is contracted primarily from blood transfusions or bite wounds. There is low risk of transmitting FIV from one cat to another in the same household if both cats get along and stay indoors. There is no risk of contracting FIV to humans or dogs. Infected cats lead a very normal life and can live just as long as uninfected cats. There is no cure for FIV but these cats need no special medication or diet.

FeLV (Feline Leukemia)

Feline Leukemia is a virus that only effects cats and may lead to many other illnesses. FeLV cats should be kept indoors both to protect them from exposure to disease and also to prevent spreading FeLV to other cats. This virus can be transmitted from pro-longed nose to nose contact between cats. There is no cure for FeLV but these cats need no special medication or diet.

Sponsorship

Happy Hearts Haven is the last option for animals that are not highly adoptable and just need a safe and loving place to live out their lives. Sadly many animal organizations who rescue a cat that tests positive for FIV or FeLV will put the animal to sleep as they are difficult to adopt and there is limited space to keep them. If you would like to help a particular cat or kitten living at the sanctuary, please consider sponsoring one of our wonderful cats!!
