Founded in 2005, The Riverbend Humane Society is a non-profit organization that operates The Riverbend Animal Shelter, just south of Jerseyville, where a no-kill policy gives homeless animals a chance to live out their lives and find loving homes. The Hope for Animals Resale Shop and Grooming Parlor in Wood River raise funds to keep the shelter running. The Riverbend Humane Society is supported entirely by funds from the resale shop and grooming parlor, donations, adoptions, and grants.
Our Featured Pets...
Cleo is a black and white domestic short haired feline, who has been at the shelter for about two years. In the summer of 2009 Cleo was diagnosed with diabetes. She has to be given an insulin injection every twelve hours, which she will have to have for the rest of her life. She also has to be on a special diet food to help keep her glucose levels regulated. Cleo lives in the office at the shelter, where she spends most of her days lounging around. She is very special to all of the shelter staff, who hope that she will someday find her forever home.
Capone is a pit bull terrier mix who came to the shelter in 2006, at a very young age. In 2007 a young bull terrier mix named Lucy was rescued with her mother and brother. When Capone and Lucy first met each other it was love at first sight. The shelter staff knew that they could never be without each other. You could say that they are always joined at the hip. The shelter staff hopes to find them a wonderful home, where they can spend the rest of their lives with one another. Its a Romeo and Juliet story that will someday have a happy ending.
Molly and Sam are two felines who both came to the shelter at a very young age. Molly and her siblings were brought to the shelter after they were found abandoned. Just a day or two later Sam and her siblings were brought in after being found abandoned as well. Soon Molly and Sam's siblings had all found wonderful homes, but both the girls had not. Shelter staff decided to put both Molly and Sam together, and they've been inseparable ever since. Though both girls have very different personalities, they seem to balance each other. The shelter staff hopes to find a home where both the girls can live wonderful lives and stay best friends forever.
Adopting a friend
We welcome potential adopters within a 200-mile radius of the shelter. Potential adopters must personally meet the animal and fill out an adoption application. Depending, it can take anywhere from 24-48 hours for an application to be reviewed. If approved, shelter staff will arrange a vet appointment for the adopted animal, if it has not already been altered. All adult animals must be altered before going to their new homes. Also the potential adopter must read and sign an adoption agreement at time of adopting.
