Hank and Mowgli are our featured pets. They are both products of neglectful previous ownership....and how lack of maintence medications and proper vet care can play havoc on their wellbeing. Both of these beautiful Eskies are basically on hold, while they go through their grueling heartworm treatments. Both dogs are wonderful, young, highly active dogs, and are now subject to a sedate crate life for months of treatments and blood tests. Heartworm Disease is a serious condition that can kill. We were lucky with these two Eskies, they both have moderate enough disease to be able to under go the treatment and become healthy dogs once again! The treatment is expensive and a wait game. The worms must be killed off slowly, in order to not kill the dog at the same time. The dog must be kept quiet, so not to get the heart pumping to fast and blood circulation trying to pass too many worms at once....which could be lethal. Fortunately, both Hank and Mowgli are doing well and coping nicely with their treatments and lack of activity. This does not go without challenges though! Rescue directors and foster care people go the extra mile to make sure these furkids are "entertained" in a quiet, reserved way, so they don't get depressed during the weeks of treatment and waiting for a negative blood test. YES, they can get depressed too. If you have any questions about either one of these great Eskie boys, please e-mail... tlmckenty@aol.com. After we get a negative blood test, both Hank and Mowgli will be available for adoption.....please stay posted with their listings for updates. Both dogs will require a 6 month blood test to confirm...."no stranglers" and a second negative result. We will ask potential adopters to take the responsibility to cover this follow-up test.

Capn Ray and Snowbird are finally "officially" MARRIED!!! They tied the knot on June 20th at their church near their beloved home on Walnut Hill Farm in Santa Claus, Indiana, with family, friends and Eskies attending!!! We thought you would want to share in their joy! All went like clockwork, and despite the heat, all was beautiful!!! We will soon post a few pictures of the "Best Dogs"!!! : )
The IL Heart Bandits chapter hardly missed a beat during the nuptials! Our Illinois Rescue Coordinator Tracy and family attended the wedding, but also continued to hold down the fort, taking phone calls and arranging to bring back new adoptable dogs to Illinois! She has been doing a marvelous job of exactly that for well over a year now and we could not have had such a successful year without her!
You can email Tracy with any questions about our furkids at tlmckenty@aol.com.
Who We Are
Welcome to Illinois Heart Bandits. I'm Cap'n Ray, and my rescue partner and fiancee is Snowbird/Louise of Snowbird Eskie Rescue, IN. Together we cover Eskies in need ...in Illinois, Indiana, and parts of Kentucky......for that matter, wherever the needy Eskie is located, if we can help, we do! We also occasionally take in, what we like to call "Eskie Wannabes"....other breeds that come to our attention that need help. Yes, it's a big territory to cover, but we love helping the Eskies......AND "wannabes"!!!! : ) We are working on merging our two chapters (plus Kentucky) into Walnut Hill Farm American Eskimo Dog Sanctuary. The farm is actually a 40 acre farm in the beautiful rolling hills of Santa Claus, IN. Yes, children, there really is a Santa Claus! A fun little town! We are in the process of renovating and reclaiming about ten acres of the farm to make room for our rescues and a much needed senior sanctuary for older Eskies who have lost or been abandoned by their families in their later years. We plan to provide a happy retirement for them in return for all their years of loving devotion. Now don't get this wrong, we are not a "drop-off" retirement village for your older dogs that you have lost interest in......what we are doing is trying very hard to provide a safe, secure and loving place for all those older Eskies that are given up on by their owners and basically dumped in their senior years. How very sad that some just plain get tired of their older dogs. Of course, there are also unforeseen situations that may put a heartbroken owner into a position of no choice but to give up their beloved dog and friend. We also get older dogs that have out lived their beloved owners, with no where else to go. The senior furkids are difficult to re-home and adopt out, few people want to give an older dog a new forever home. : ( Along with the older dogs we will also temporarily house younger dogs at the farm, while they wait in hopes for new homes & people of their very own! Snowbird and I will semi-retire along with the Eskies! I can't think of better company to spend with than these loving senior furkids! They all still have a ton of love to give! Meanwhile we will love to help you find the perfect Eskie for your own family to love! We are authorized chapters of Heart Bandits American Eskimo Dog Rescue. Heart Bandits Inc. is a national non-profit 501(c)(3) organization dedicated to rescuing American Eskimo dogs or "Eskies". Our dogs come from owner surrenders, shelters, humane societies, and other all breed rescue groups. We work closely with other Heart Bandits chapters nationwide. We also work with other rescues, animal controls, shelters and humane societies in our area. All of our work is voluntary! We give our time and devotion freely! Our reward comes from the love and affection given to us by our dogs, and the joy of seeing them sent off to loving and deserving families! Unfortunately, love doesn't pay the bills for dog food, medicines, vet care, transportation, etc. Funding is always a problem. Our expenses are only partially offset by our adoption fees. Therefore any donations, however small, are ALWAYS much appreciated! Paypal donations can be made anytime to louise@snowbirdeskierescue.org .
Adopting a friend
Adoptive families must complete a Heart Bandits application available on request or at www.heartbandits.com. The must also provide a vet reference and agree to a home visit. Our adoption fee is $200.00 for an adult. Puppies are generally a bit more. Reduced fees are possible for senior adopters and in certain circumstances. For your fee you will receive a happy, healthy pet who has been spay/neutered, current on all rabies and annual shots, behavior and temperment tested, heartworm negative, and individually matched just for you. Many are also microchipped. And, of course, all the Eskie hugs and kisses you can handle are...... priceless.

Where We Are
We are located in Aurora, IL when we aren't down on the farm getting it ready for our expanded rescue. We also have foster homes in the area. Our dogs enjoy living in the home with us and our foster families. They are treated as family members and enjoy the pampering they deserve. Since we are private homes, we are not open to the public. We have no "shelter" for you to visit. All visits generally take place at the Aurora PetSmart or in your own home where we can see how the dog likes you as well as how you like the dog. Our adoptions are a two way street, and we require everyone, two legged and four legged to be happy with the arrangements.
