Because we try to match each dog with the adoptive home, photographs or descriptions of shelties awaiting adoption are not available.
Who We Are
Secondhand Shelties, Ltd. is a not-for-profit Chicagoland area breed rescue for Shetland Sheepdogs ("Shelties"). Formed and incorporated in the State of Illinois in 1995, Secondhand Shelties is licensed by the Illinois Department of Agriculture. We are a Foster Home Organization. No Facility.
Secondhand Shelties helps find new homes for abandoned, orphaned, and unwanted shelties. We are not dog breeders nor are we members of any breed club. Although we receive referrals for both adoptions and owner give-ups from breeders and clubs, our rescue functions as a
corporation and separate entity from any club or rescue.
We do not exchange dogs with other rescues. Once a sheltie is in our program, the dog stays with us until the dog is adopted - regardless of the time it may take to find the "perfect home" for that particular dog.
Our "Secondhand Shelties" come from many backgrounds. Approximately half of the shelties are given up by their owners. The other half come from animal control facilities, shelters or are found wandering the streets.
Everyone involved with Secondhand Shelties volunteers their services, their homes, and their time because of their love for this breed. All foster homes are licensed to insure the best for each and every one of our dogs. Because all our shelties live in foster homes while awaiting
adoption, they are able to be seen in a normal home environment.
Everything medically necessary is done in order for our dogs to be in good, healthy adoptable condition prior to showing them to potential adopters, regardless of the cost. All dogs in the care of Secondhand Shelties are checked by a veterinarian upon entry into our rescue program. Vaccinations, neutering, dentals and any other needed
medical procedures are done prior to adoption.
Normally we have adult shelties of various ages available for adoption. On rare occasions we have dogs under 1 year of age. Because we are not breeders, we rarely have puppies.
Please call for an adoption application if you'd like to open your heart and home to a wonderful, loving Secondhand Sheltie who needs you. If calling outside the 630, 708, 847 or 815 area code we will return your call collect. You can also request an application by e-mail, but be sure to include your name, home address, city/state and telephone number. Please have patience if you leave us a message or send an e-mail. All members of our rescue work full time jobs while also caring for their own pets as well as foster dogs. Because of this, we may take a day or two to return your call or e-mail.
A Foster Home Organization - NO FACILITY.
Adopting a friend
We only adopt within approximately 100 miles of Chicago. Potential adopters will be asked to complete an adoption questionnaire to give us an idea of the family's lifestyle and home environment. Our goal is to find a home that will best suit the needs of each particular dog, taking into consideration the type of family, home, children, and pets they will be living with. Because we try to match each dog with the adoptive home, photographs or descriptions of shelties awaiting adoption are not available on our web site.
We hope you understand, but in the best interest of the dog, we must have a signed application and check references before we will discuss the shelties we have available for adoption that we feel would best fit into your home and family situation. We do require secure, fenced back yards for our dogs - NO split rail or Electric fences . Condo or apartment situations handled per application.
Once your family decides which of our shelties you want to meet, our foster homes contact you to tell you a little more about the dog and how it has behaved in their home. You will then make an appointment with them to take your entire family (and current dogs) to spend some time
meeting the dog in a comfortable environment. Note: You will not be able to take a dog home with you.
After your meeting with the rescue dogs we ask that your family go home and discuss the dog(s) you have met. We appreciate your decision within 48 hours of the meeting.
Once you have decided to adopt one of the dogs you've met, a representative of Secondhand Shelties will contact you to set up a day and time to bring the dog to your home for the adoption. We ask that husbands/wives are both present for the adoption. At that time you will be required to sign an adoption contract and submit an adoption fee.
The sheltie is then placed with you for a 30 day "approval" period. If, due to unforeseeable circumstances it does not work out, the dog must be returned to us and we will refund your adoption fee. By no means is this time allotted for you to "try out" a dog. We do reserve the right to refuse any application or adoption.
All of our Shelties that are available for adoption live in foster homes.
