Who We Are

All dogs must be current on shots, checked by a veterinarian and evaluated for personality and temperament prior to entering our program. Upon completion of the 'Dog Personality Profile,' a processing fee of $35.00 per dog will be assessed. Checks are to be written to German Shepherd Dog Rescue, Inc.

Each potential adoptive home must complete a Foster/Adoption Application. The intending adoptive home will initially foster the dog prior to the adoption process. This allows the family and the dog to experience a "getting-to-know-you" adjustment period. Each home and family are evaluated so the best possible placement can be made in the dog's best interest. Printed information about the German Shepherd dog is available to anyone who wishes to know more about the breed. It is highly recommended that first time owners familiarize themselves with the breed before fostering a dog. Also, we have an extensive training list that is available to anyone who may request assistance in this area.

Adoption Events are held the first Saturday of every month in Northbrook and the third Sunday of every month at various locations. Please check our Events page for the exact locations of these events.

Adoption fees help defray our expenses for veterinary care, the required spay/neuter of all animals, microchips, food and other unforeseen medications or surgeries. If you are not planning on adopting or you have adopted and would to do something additional, you may wish to join our Sponsorship Program. Consider the following donation and what they can purchase..............

We always have a need for FOSTER HOMES and VOLUNTEERS!!! Help with short-term or long-term foster care, staff adoption days, assist with home visits, transport dogs, visit shelters, help with fund raising and mailings, etc. We would be pleased to have you as a volunteer!!

Adopting a friend

Requirements:

• Be at least 21 years old
• Have knowledge and consent of all adults living in the household
• Have written approval from owner of your residence, if you rent
• Have a valid ID with current address
• Be approved as a suitable adoptive home by GSR
• Must foster the dog briefly to ensure that the match is satisfactory

Process:

• Compete the Foster/Adoption application. This can be done in one of the following manners:
  1. On-Line application, e-mail completed form to us
  2. Call (847) 677-0561 or e-mail us at gsdrescue1@comcast.net, and leave your name, address, phone and fax number and a form will be mailed or faxed to you
• When the Adoption Coordinator has received the completed paperwork, she/he will contact you. This is part of the screening process so the best possible match between dog and human can be made. The final decision o place the animal is determined by the Adoption Coordinator with the Adoption Committee.
• The standard procedure for adopting a dog is at the next available adoption event after the time period for fostering the intended dog has elapsed. Verification that the match is good will be completed prior to the adoption. The Adoption Coordinator retains the right to waive this procedural condition.

Please note that several applicants may be interested in the same dog. German Shepherd Rescue decides which home is right for a dog with the best interest of the dog in mind. This does not imply that your home would not be best for another dog.
