Our John John is dreaming of a home of his own! He is a young adult who is gentle and sweet, and who will get along well in any situation. He deserves a loving family. This handsome boy is part Dalmatian, part Basset Hound, and has a few other breeds in the mix. He has a calm temperament and a delightful personality.

Lucky is waiting patiently for the perfect family. Senior dogs love and appreciate their owners and are grateful for every moment they have with you. For more information on the joys of adopting a senior dog, visit The Senior Dog Project.

Give the sweetest gift of all this Valentine's Day: a family to love, for a homeless Dalmatian.

Please consider adopting a rescue Dalmatian before buying from a breeder or visiting a petstore. All the Dalmatians that we have available will make wonderful companions. They all deserve a second chance at having their own family and a good life. Adopting an adult or senior Dal is a rewarding experience.

We are always grateful for donations to help pay the veterinary bills for our rescue Dals. Donate online through Petfinder, visit our main Web site, or send checks to the address below. Thank you!

Adopting a Dalmatian

Please complete our online application, available on our main Web site: http://dalrescueillinois.net. We do a Home Visit as part of the application process. The adoption fee is $300.00.

We generally expect our adopters to have:

  1. experience with Dalmatians,
  2. homes with fenced-in yards,
  3. generous amounts of time to spend with their Dal,
  4. the resources to provide quality food and excellent veterinary care for their Dalmatian.
We rarely place Dalmatians in families with children. While Dalmatians generally love kids and do fine with well-behaved children, most families with young children do not have time to give a dog all the attention and training a Dal needs.

We seldom have puppies in rescue. If you are looking for a Dalmatian puppy, we will be happy to point you in the direction of a reputable breeder. It is best not to buy puppies from pet stores or from casual, "backyard" breeders.

We take back the Dals that we place at any time, for any reason, and provide a full refund of the adoption fee.

We place Dalmatians only in Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Wisconsin, and Michigan. We make NO exceptions to this policy. Please do NOT call, email, or submit an application if you live in another state. We receive many inquires, especially for puppies and young dogs, and do not answer those that originate outside of our region. We find wonderful adopters for our Dals in our five-state area. We prefer to have our Dals close-by. We are never in a hurry to place our Dals, and are happy to keep them in foster care until the appropriate adoptive home is available nearby.

If you do not live in our area, please visit the Web site of the Dalmatian Assistance League to find a Dalmatian Rescue organization near you. There are Dalmatians in need everywhere.

About Us

We are a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization incorporated in the State of lllinois and licensed by the Illinois Department of Agriculture. All work is done by volunteers.

Dalmatian Rescue of Illinois is dedicated to finding permanent, loving, homes for abandoned Dalmatians in Illinois and the surrounding states. Most of our Dals have come from shelters where they have run out of time. All our Dals are spayed or neutered, up to date on shots, on heartworm preventative and microchipped. They receive basic training and lots of love in their foster homes.

We take in Dalmatians of all ages, and believe that older Dals, too, deserve a chance at a new life. Please consider adopting a senior Dal — it is a rewarding experience!

For more information about our Dalmatians and our mission, visit Our Rescue Dals, Our Mission on our main Web site.

We do not have a shelter. All our Dalmatians available for adoption are kept in private homes. Appointments must be made in order to meet them.

Dalmatian Rescue of Illinois is an independent rescue organization, and is associated with no other rescue group or club. We help Dalmatians in need in Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Wisconsin, and Michigan. We place Dalmatians only in these states.

Dalmatian Rescue of Illinois is proud to be affiliated with the Dalmatian Assistance League, a national umbrella networking organization.

Information For Shelters

Dalmatian Rescue of Illinois is happy to provide shelters with information about our rescue program, including copies of our:
  • current State of Illinois Department of Agriculture license
  • IRS 501(c)(3) determination letter
  • State of Illinois Office of the Attorney General Charitable Trusts Bureau registration
  • Adoption Contract.

We take in purebred Dalmatians and Dalmatian mixes. All our Dals are spayed or neutered, fully vaccinated, and microchipped before placement. They are given fecal and heartworm tests, and receive all the vet care that they need. We take in Dals that are heartworm positive and have them treated before placement. We consult veterinary specialists when the condition of the dog warrants it.

We do home visits with prospective adopters as part of our adoption process, and do post-adoption follow-up. We take back our Dals at any time, with a full refund of the adoption fee.

We are also happy to help shelters identify dogs in their care that they believe may be Dalmatians but are unable to identify with certainty. Please note: Dalmatian spots may be black or brown. Dals may also have one or two patches of solid color, especially on the face and ears. (Patches do not make the dogs "mixes" of any sort. There are generally patched puppies in every litter of Dalmatians.) Dal coats are generally short, but long coats do occur.

Do not hesitate to send us a photo if you have a question about the breed of a particular dog that you think could be a Dal.

Giving Up Your Dalmatian

If you believe that you can no longer keep your Dalmatian, we will be happy to speak with you about the possibility of surrendering your Dalmatian to our organization.

Please email, or call us (between 9am and 6pm).

The great majority of our Dalmatians come from shelters where they have run out of time. We take Dalmatians from individuals only as room allows.

Please note that we do not board Dalmatians while their owners are on vacation, and we cannot provide funds to pay veterinary bills that owners cannot afford to pay.

We are happy to speak with Dalmatian owners about the problems they are having with their Dals, in hopes of finding ways for owners to keep their Dals in their homes.
