People and Animals in Community Together Humane Society (PACT) is a no-kill, not-for-profit, and all volunteer animal shelter and educational organization. We were
established in April of 2000 in Downers Grove, Illinois.
PACT Humane Society is staffed by volunteers who serve in many different capacities including daily animal care providers (cleaning and socialization), adoption counselors, management team members,
program coordinators, and advisors.
We have adopted out over 2,900 cats and dogs.
We are no-kill, only euthanizing animals in advanced stages of cancer or liver disease, or an untreatable illness, where there is no quality of life or hope of recovery.
In our history, we have only had to euthanize one animal for extreme aggression.
We have rescued thousands of animals from animal control facilities where they would have been euthanized within a matter of days.
We rescue older animals and "less-than-perfect" ones, such as dogs with heartworm, and cats with FIV or diabetes, cats missing tails, eyes or legs.
We are fiscally responsible, with 88-90% of our revenue going toward veterinary care.
PACT does not have its own facility space. Instead we operate out of three Illinois PETsMART Adoption Centers: two in Schaumburg, and one in Darien. Because of our limited space, some animals live in foster homes until space or adoption opportunities become available.
Adopting a Friend
Whether you plan to adopt a cat or a kitten, it is essential that you keep in mind that you are making a 10 to 20 year permanent commitment to that animal. Since most of the animals available for adoption have already had one or more homes, this humane society feels it is critical that the animals be placed in a new, loving, and permanent home.
All of our cats are:
examined by a licensed veterinarian
dewormed
tested for Feline Leukemia (FeLV) and the Feline Immunodeficiency Virus (FIV)
vaccinated as age appropriate
microchipped
treated for any condition our veterinarians recommend, such as dental cleanings
and every animal is spayed or neutered BEFORE adoption

PLEASE NOTE: When you find an animal that you are interested in adopting, you will be asked to complete an application and speak with an Adoption Counselor. Together, you will discuss the
contents of your application, but the counselor will seek to understand the type of companion animal you are looking for. The Adoption Counselor will then share with you the history and needs of the specific animal you are interested in adopting. Together you will work to find the animal most suited to your needs.
It is the Adoption Counselor's responsibility to determine if the adoption is in the best interest of the particular animal and the prospective adopter, based on that animal's history and specific needs.
If you are currently renting, we require a copy of your lease so that we can verify that your landlord or association accepts pets.

Potential adopters are free to view our cats available for adoption any time during PETsMART store hours. To interact with a cat and/or speak with an adoption counselor, drop by during our posted adoption hours.

This humane society is always in need of volunteers to assist us in our mission.
