Our Pet List

Our Featured Pet...

Frankie is a bundle of energy, life, and joy! He is always SO happy to see anyone he knows come take him for a walk. He had a home once...for a few days. Trouble was, his new family forgot that when you haven't had experience with young children you need to be exposed to them properly. He only scared a child, but was returned. This dog will love you forever, we don't want him to give up on people, we know somewhere there is a person that would love him forever !

Frankie's first person was irresposible and didn't keep him home., so he knows what it was like to be loved and wanted... Now he'd like to have that feeling again. If you have time to give this boy some love, come see him. You'll fall in love.

Shop at Critters, etc. and help the homeless Critters.

The rescue store, Critters, etc.,opened on April 21, 2003 and offers an interesting mixture of merchandise. We carry all kinds of used items: furniture, household goods. Then, because we're pet people, we have a selection of leashes, collars, toys and treats. We are asking for donations from the community for the "used" section of the store... and offering tax receipts because we are a 501c3 corporation. We could really use more good furniture and large appliances. Critters is located on Highway 2 across from the Harvest Food store and next to the Eagle's Nest Motel.

Priest River Animal Rescue tries to always have some pets available for viewing in our Critters store so come on in ... and the pets will be there to help you fall in love!

Who We Are

Priest River Animal Rescue was formed in February 2002 by two Realtors and all of their friends who would listen. The events that prodded them into starting a rescue group included dogs being tied up and left when the tenants moved out and people having their dogs put to sleep because they were going to be moving. The membership very quickly grew from a small organizational group to over 40.

Our immediate goals are to care for the lost, abandoned, and injured animals in the community AND to work toward "No More Homeless Pets" by encouraging spay and neuter. We have used over $12,500 in grant monies toward that end and are now making application for more.
Another immediate goal is to provide ID tags to everyone willing to put a collar and a tag on their dogs. We give them out in our store and at every event we attend. These have already helped several lost dogs find their way home. One of them three times! We put ID tags on all the dogs in our system as well. During 2006 we were able to return about 26 animals to their homes.

Our long term goal is to create a sanctuary where homeless pets can reside while waiting for new families, and where unadoptable pets can live out their lives in peace. At present our pets live in foster homes.

We are currently working with the City of Priest River to establish a facility where pets can be kept while foster homes are located. Right now there is no "immediate" place on our end of the County in which to house an animal when found. This has proven to be a frustrating endeavor, as the City wishes the County to take part in the project and the County officials can't quite see the need. Of course the focus of the project is seen from two sides: The City wants to enforce codes, collect dog tag fees, etc. Priest River Animal Rescue wants to protect the dogs from abusive or neglectful owners! There is still hope that the two goals can mesh for the good of all concerned.

Adopting a friend

Families wishing to adopt our dogs are required to fill out a form giving us basic information about themselves and their facilities. We want to know how and where our dogs will be kept and why they want a pet. When possible, we visit the potential new home before placing the dogs. We do perform follow up visits and have twice removed a dog from its adoptive home because things weren't as presented. We will always "take back" a dog if the new family decides that it wasn't a good match.

We charge a $75 adoption fee for grown dogs, $100 for purebred dogs, and $40 for cats. We do offer Senior Citizen (over 65) discounts. If you want a companion and it doesn't quite fit into a fixed income, call us, we'll help you find someone to love. All of our animals are given basic immunizations, a rabies shot, are wormed and spayed or neutered prior to adoption. Plus, lots of tender loving care. We also provide follow up immunizations when the series hasn't been completed prior to adoption.

In our first year of operation we placed 70 pets in new homes. In 2006 we placed 316 dogs and cats. They just keep coming! Because we don't yet have a shelter, we arrange for meetings either at our store building, or at our foster homes. To arrange for a viewing, call 208-448-0699.
