BLAS and Western Sleddog Rescue
Our Featured Pet...
We always have huskies available for adoption but PLEASE, if you are looking for "curtains" and more interested in markings, colors and eye colors than anything else, we can not help you. Our volunteers work with these dogs every day and all of us are heartsick by the very idea that markings and such mean more than a dog itself does. We will not help anyone seeking to find a pretty status symbol, we match hearts, not looks! So please, do not even contact us if you are after a "look" more than a dog! Shipping from Salt Lake can be arranged for out of state adoptions. And a ride to Salt Lake or surrounding areas can also be arranged to see these animals into good homes.
Some IMPORTANT things to understand about Sleddog breeds BEFORE you adopt!
1. No Husky is ever reliable offleash no matter how much training it has
2. ALL Huskies will be a threat to smaller animals, be they dogs or cats due to the prey drive inherent in the variety of dog it is, it is NOT aggression, it is instinct. If you've owned or met a Husky that wasn't, it was the exception, NOT the rule and you shouldn't expect all huskies to be that way.
3. Sleddogs do NOT have wolf in them, no musher would own or run anything with wolf in it due to the unreliability and excessive stubborness of wolves and wolf hybrids. The Balto in Disney was fiction, the real Balto was a PUREBRED Siberian Husky without a single drop of wolf anywhere in his pedigree.
4, Racing type Siberian Huskies have very little in common with the American show and pet types, they are leggier, not as heavily coated and tend to be calmer and easier to train, they also come in a much wider variety of colors and coat patterns.
5. Only 30% of purebred Siberian Huskies have blue eyes, the blue eyes are actually considered unfavorable amoung good breeders because they are genetically linked to PRA, Glaucoma, deafness and blindness in the breed.
6. Huskies will NOT stay home, a good sturdy fence at least 6 feet high is a must to contain them.
7. Huskies are easy to housebreak regaurdless of their age, the racing varieties are especially clean and careful.
8. Huskies have a natural patience with children, they will accept more from a child than from an adult.
9. Huskies can be trained to perform any kind of work, they learn quickly and enjoy having a job to do.
10. Huskies of any age are delightful, fun loving, brilliantly intelligent companions, please consider one for your family!

Who We Are
Bear Lake Animal Shelter began as a Sleddog rescue. As local law inforcement became aquainted with us, they began sending stray dogs to us. The county did not have a shelter of it's own. After 6 years of rescuing the animals of Bear Lake and the City of Montpelier, it was decided to become the shelter for the area and to begin more in depth work for the area. The shelter is the only rescue organization that accepts complete kennel surrenders. The largest number of dogs the shelter has taken in was a kennel closure in Black Foot Idaho that saw 67 dogs into our program. We specialize in Sled Dogs but have a wide variety of dogs available at all times.

Standard adoption fee can vary based on the animal and how much has gone into it's rescue.Standard Fees $75 for large breed adult dogs (1 year and older) $75 for small breed adults (1 year and older) $100 for all puppies (6 weeks to 1 year)
Why the difference? Because as a shelter we handle litterally hundreds more large breed dogs and watch most never find loving homes. Most people won't give an older dog a chance, puppies are cuter and what most people want, especially small breed puppies. So we offer lower prices on the kinds of dogs that are harder to place in hopes of encouraging people to think harder about their choices and give them a chance! Adoption fees are NOT negotiable and are to be paid in full before the animal is taken home. These are not objects and we are not Walmart, no layaways, no payment plans, if you can not afford the adoption it is our honest belief that medical care and costs of maintenance are at risk and the dog should not go to that sort of home. We reserve the right to refuse to adopt any animal to any home at any time.
