Remembering A Friend

Marian "Mar" Smith died peacefully September 18, 2010 in hospice at the Greene County Medical Center. Mar was born on October 25, 1925, to Florence and Lester Crews of Ft. Dodge. She graduated valedictorian from Ft. Dodge High School, received a Bachelors in economics from the University of Iowa, graduating Phi Beta Kappa and later earned a Masters of English from Iowa State. While attending the University of Iowa she was accepted into the original Iowa Writer's Workshop under the tutelage of Paul Engle. After a career in real estate, Mar taught high school English in Bayard and Gowrie. She also directed many school and community plays and musicals and for years negotiated for the teacher's union. After retiring, her love of animals led her to found the Jefferson chapter of PAWS. Her many interests included reading, bridge, antiquing, travel and her beloved poetry group. Mar is survived by her husband, Jack; son, Bruce Banister and wife, Sunje of Jefferson; daughter, Jan of Tampa; son, Dale of Phoenix; and grandsons, Jack Banister, Sam Werner and Jesse Wilkes. Marian was a deeply compassionate person who helped both animals and people in need. She will be greatly missed.

Who We Are

We are the People for Animal Welfare Society (P.A.W.S.). P.A.W.S. is a volunteer non-profit 501(c)(3) corporation located in Greene County, Iowa. Our purpose is to promote humane treatment of Greene County animals by providing humane education, responding to neglect/abuse calls, and providing a low income spay/neuter program for Greene County residents. We also care for the animals at the Greene County Animal Shelter, which is a small shelter for lost and abandoned animals. We strive to find loving, permanent homes for these animals through our adoption program. We have a new website!

P.A.W.S. has a successful fostering program. People interested in fostering should contact Bonnie, foster program coordinator for the Greene County Animal Shelter, at 515-386-9814. You will be provided with a phone number to get in touch with a volunteer in case of emergency.

Adopting a friend

Adoption fees for animals adopted from the shelter are $100 for a dog and $75 for a cat. This fee includes spay/neuter, rabies shot, distemper shot, flea preventative, worming, and microchip. If an animal is too young to be altered at the time of adoption, either the animal may have the surgery done through PAWS at our veterinarian when of age, or the adopter may choose a different veterinarian, but must furnish proof of altering. If the adopter chooses to use their own vet, they will be refunded a portion of the adoption fee. All animals adopted from the facility are subject to spaying/neutering in accordance with Iowa law.

Donating and Volunteering

We are really in need of some new dog leashes and kitten food

The shelter can always use donations of paper towels, cleaning supplies, dog and cat toys, dog collars, dog leashes, blankets, Frontline for dogs/cats, new or used cat furniture, cat beds, cat towers, treats, and new or used doghouses to pass on to dogs in need in the community. Also in need are specialty foods, such as kitten food, puppy food, senior food and moist food. Volunteers are always needed.

Protect your pet. ShelterCare Pet Insurance Programs

Volunteers do shelter chores on the weekends only.  We do chores on Saturday and Sunday, morning and night.  It is easier than ever to volunteer.

Come Visit Us!

PAWS is located on West Russell Street in Jefferson, next to the wastewater treatment plant. From Highway 4, take Russell Street west at the stoplight (the only one in town), go past the swimming pool, and start down the hill. Once you see the waste water treatment plant, turn into their parking lot. The facility is the building on the southeast side of the parking lot.
