News...
We will be at PetCo at Southridge Mall June 21st, from 10am till 2pm with pets for adoption.
Mission
Our mission is to care for lost and abandoned pets and to place them in good homes. We work to educate the public on the importance of having your pets spayed or neutered to help control the overpopulation and neglect of pets.
Who We Are
The Humane Society of Lucus County was formed in 1996. We are a no-kill shelter located in southern Iowa. Our building was donated by the Johnson Family of Chariton. We operate with volunteers and one part-time employee. We are independent from the city and all our funds are from donations. As with all shelters, donations of cash and supplies are always needed.
Adopting a friend
Costs: Dogs are $50 for spayed a female and $40 for a neutered male. Puppies are $60 for a spayed female and $50 for a neutered male.
Cats are $40 for a spayed female and $30 for a neutered male. Kittens are $45 for a spayed female and $35 for a neutered male.
If you are adopting a pet that has not been altered you are required to have it completed by the date on your adoption contract. All adoptions have the spay and neutered fees built into the final cost. $25 for a female to be spayed and $15 for a male to be neutered. We take your paid fee and match it. When we receive a confirmation from your vet that the surgery has been completed we will pay your vet $50 towards a spay and $30 for a neuter. The most we will pay for a spay is $50 and $30 for a neuter (your fee built into the adoption plus our match) if your vet charges more you will need to pay the difference yourself.
Our policy is to try to have all pets altered before adoption since we are a no kill shelter. Puppies and kittens that are too young will have a date on your adoption contract that the spay or neuter needs to be done by. Please help us out, when we call you to set up the appointment please call us back so we can make an appointment with a vet. You may use a vet of your choice or the vet we use for the shelter.
We reserve the right to refuse adoption to anyone.
