Our mission is to care for lost and abandoned pets and to place them in good homes. We work to educate the public on the importance of having your pets spayed or neutered to help control the overpopulation and neglect of pets.
Who We Are
The Humane Society of Lucus County was formed in 1996. We are a no-kill shelter located in southern Iowa. Our building was donated by the Johnson Family of Chariton. We operate with volunteers and one part-time employee. We are independent from the city and all our funds are from donations. As with all shelters, donations of cash and supplies are always needed.

ADOPTION FEES:
DOGS: $75.00 Includes: Vaccinations,Microchip,
Heartworm, Dewormer and Spay or Neuter.
PUPPIES: $95.00 Vaccinations,Dewormed. Microchip and
Spay or Neuter must be done at 6 months
of age. Your deposit will be returned to you
after you provide paperwork from your vet
your puppy has been fixed. Or you can bring
them back to our vet and the Spay and Nueter
will be done at no additional cost to you.
Cats: $75.00
Includes:
Vaccinations,Dewormer and Spay or Neuter and testing and vaccination for
FELV/FIV.
Kittens: $85.00
Includes:
Vaccinations,Dewormer.
Spay or Neuter must be done at 6 months
of age. Your deposit will be returned to you
after you provide paperwork from your vet
your Kitten has been fixed. Or you can bring
them back to our vet and the Spay and Nueter
will be done at no additional cost to you.
All Purebreed adoptions are $100.00 plus Spay or Neuter cost.
Our policy is to try to have all pets altered before adoption since we are a no kill shelter. Puppies and kittens that are too young will have a date on your adoption contract that the spay or neuter needs to be done by. Please help us out, when we call you to set up the appointment please call us back so we can make an appointment with a vet. You may use a vet of your choice or the vet we use for the shelter.
We reserve the right to refuse adoption to anyone.

We are located at 118 East Lincoln Street in Chariton just off highway 34 next to C&C Cycle. Our hours are Monday-Saturday 8:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. and open again at 2:00 p.m. until 4:00 p.m. Closed on Sundays to the public unless you have a appointment schduled on Sunday.
