Who We Are

We are the local animal shelter operating in Des Moines County. The building is owned by the city of Burlington, and it is their resource for impounding stray animals. Once they have waited the required amount of time,the animals are turned over to our care for placement in homes.

Adopting a Friend


You can adopt a dog for $75.00, which includes a $40.00 voucher for spaying or neutering at local vets. This fee also includes a free physical at any vet in Des Moines County, IA. You can adopt a female cat for $65.00, which includes a $40.00 voucher for spaying. This fee also includes a free physical at any vet in Des Moines County, IA. You can adopt a male cat for $65.00, which includes a $40.00 voucher for neutering. This fee also includes a free physical at any vet in Des Moines County, IA. If the dog is already altered, the adoption fee is only $35.00. If the cat is already altered the fee is only $25.00.

Volunteering and Donations

VOLUNTEER REQUEST:

We have many volunteers that walk dogs, brush cats, help to clean, wash dishes or just hand out treats. Volunteers are important to us, as they help the animals to remain socialized with people! If you'd like to volunteer and are over 18, come in and sign up. If you are 13 and up you need your parents to sign the consent forms and they must stay with you the first time. Adoption hours are M-F 3-6 Sat. 1-5 Sunday 1-5 Please call first.

We are a non profit organization operating STRICTLY on donations. Donations can be mailed to the Des Moines County Humane Society at P.O. Box 822, Burlington, IA 52601.

SPECIAL REQUEST: We are in need of good loving homes for all of our pets! New animals come in every day!

If you are in our vicinity, we also are in need of old blankets, towels, even placemats (for cats), bleach, and dog & cat toys. We also need the usual dog, puppy, cat, and kitten food (both dry and canned), powdered milk or baby formula and pet treats. We never seem to have enough canned food! Please help! Your donations are much needed and MUCH APPRECIATED!

Directions from Hwy 34:

We are approximately two miles north of Highway 34 on the east side of Highway 61 (Roosevelt Avenue) in Burlington.Coming from the north on Highway 61, we are about a quarter mile south of Sunnyside Avenue.
