Who We Are

Located in Honolulu on the island of Oahu, the Hawaiian Humane Society, a society for the prevention of cruelty to animals (SPCA), was established by Helen Kinau Wilder in 1897. Wilder, a compassionate advocate for those who could not speak for themselves, was commissioned by the Republic of Hawaii to act on behalf of animals that were mistreated or abandoned. In 1908, the responsibilities of the Humane Society were broadened to include the prevention of cruelty to children. After the Children's Service Association was created in 1935, the Humane Society turned its full attention to animal welfare and protection. The history of animals in Hawaii and of the Hawaiian Humane Society can be found in the book Poi Dogs & Popoki available at www.hawaiianhumane.org/donations/buyproducts.html.

Through the support and generosity of more than 10,000 caring individuals, we have worked to improve the welfare of animals through education, legislation and prevention of cruelty. We are a private, non-profit 501(c)(3) organization, guided by a dedicated board of community leaders. Though united with many humane societies across the country in a common concern for animals, the Hawaiian Humane Society is an independent Hawaii organization and receives no funding from national organizations. Adopting a friend

When you adopt from the Hawaiian Humane Society, you are gaining a marvelous companion and giving an animal a home -- all at a very reasonable price. Please visit our Waialae Avenue shelter and meet all the wonderful cats, dogs, rabbits, guinea pigs, turtles, mice, birds and other animals entrusted to our care. The adoption process takes approximately an hour, but give yourself plenty of time to find just the right companion animal for your household. You will be asked to fill out an Adoption Profile and talk with an adoption counselor. (You may want to download an Adoption Profile, fill it out at home, and bring it with you.) Adoption hours are 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. weekdays and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. weekends and most holidays.

Our Pets of the Week...

Our Pets of the Week are just a few of the approximately 40 cats, 50 dogs and a dozen other small animals that are available for adoption. These particular animals may have already found new homes. Please visit us at the Humane Society to see all our wonderful animals in person. Your new animal companion could be waiting for you here.

News

It is not at all surprising that people are so interested in animal-related issues since more than half the households on Oahu include a pet... and even those who don't have a pet, care deeply about animals.

We welcome your interest and invite you to find out more about what's happening at the Hawaiian Humane Society, our special events, and animal issues in Hawaii and beyond.
