Who We Are
Founded in 1913 by Miss Bessie Bickers, a Hall County school teacher, the Humane Society of Hall County is one of the oldest shelters in the state of Georgia.
Now a private nonprofit shelter, the Humane Society of Hall County is located next to its original foundation at 845 West Ridge Road in Gainesville, Georgia. Our new 19,200 square foot facility has 65 indoor runs and houses three seperate adoption areas for large dogs, puppies, cats, and kittens.
On average the Humane Society cares for approximately 150 animals. Over 13,000 dogs, cats and other animals are brought to the Society's shelter each year. Our staff is on duty 365 days a year. As a open admission shelter, animals are never turned away if space is limited or because a owner cannot afford to leave a donation.
Sadly, if we cannot place an animal it is euthanized by intravenous injection. The fact that euthanasia remains necessary is the driving force behind the Society's hard-line policies regarding sterilization and responsible pet ownership. In 2006, our educational outreach programs visited over 70,000 people with the message of animals sterilization and humane treatment. Our hope is to soon see an end to euthanasia in Hall County and Northeast Georgia.
