The Columbia County Humane Society does not have a permanent shelter, but holds pet adoptions at Petco In Evans. The store is located in Mullins Crossing Shopping Center, next to Target, on Washington Road. We are there from 11:00 - 4:00 every Saturday. Please come out and meet some of our adoptable animals!
CCHS requires a fenced-in yard to adopt a dog or puppy. Cats and Kittens must be inside only pets and not be allowed to roam freely outside. We require home inspections for all of our dog and puppy adoptions. Since all of our staff are volunteers and must travel to the perspective home, we limit adoptions to perspective families living within a 50-mile radius of Augusta and it may take several days before an inspection can be done and the adoption process completed. There is a $95 adoption fee ($115 if the animal has been microchipped). This fee covers rabies vaccinations, some of the other required vaccinations, and spaying/neutering. Most animals, if old enough, have already been spayed or neutered. If not, you will receive a certificate to take to one of our participating vets to use as payment for the sterilization procedure.
We are a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization made up entirely of volunteers. We receive no government funding; we depend on donations, fundraisers, and adoption fees to provide food and medical care for our foster animals until permanent homes can be found.
We do not have a shelter, so all of our animals are currently in foster homes. We currently have three major homes (two dog homes and one cat home) and also have some individual temporary homes. Our animals come from a variety of places. As space and resources permit, we try to help the local animal control organizations by taking animals that have been turned in to them or picked up by them. We also receive animals through owner surrender.

We need volunteers, ages 16 and older, to help us with our adoptions at Petco. Lately, we've been very, very busy during adoptions, which is good! However, we don't always have enough volunteers to help us with all that needs to be done.
Some of the things we need help with:
1. Cleanup - during the adoptions when "accidents" happen, and ESPECIALLY at the end of adoptions (cleaning cages, putting away tables, signs, etc., helping take animals out to the foster moms' cars, taking out the trash, sweeping, etc., etc.) We begin cleanup at about 3:00 on Saturdays and would greatly appreciate ANY help!!!
2. Socializing the animals - we need your help with walking our puppies/dogs on leashes (many are not used to leashes); brushing or combing the animals; simply holding the animals in your lap and petting them. We have found that potential adopters are MUCH more interested in our foster animals when they are out and interacting with people, rather than in the cages. This also gives us a chance to see how the animals interact with each other, and with people of all ages.
3. Helping potential adopters - we need people to greet the people who are looking at our animals and answer questions, or direct them to one of the foster parents. Don't worry, it's not hard - and gets easier each time you help us.
If you have any time to donate, we are at Petco every Sat. from 11:00-3:00. Please email us at info@cchshumane.org and let us know when you can help.
Volunteers are also needed to help with our capital campaign to raise funds for building a low cost spay/neuter clinic and dog park. We have already bought land and are now beginning to raise the money to open a spay/neuter clinic with affordable prices for everyone in the entire CSRA (Central Savannah River Area, including Richmond, Columbia, McDuffie, and other Georgia counties.) If you are interested in helping, please contact Donna Evans, president of CCHS, at 706-854-1444. You can also email us for more info at info@cchshumane.org
