Who We Are

The National Detector Dog Training Center (NDDTC) provides a positive learning environment to train detector dogs and officers, as teams, to safeguard American agriculture. We develop innovative ways for these teams to prevent pests and agricultural diseases from entering the United States through airports, international borders, postal facilities and cargo areas. The National Detector Dog Training Center finds dogs to train for the program through shelters and rescues as well as owner donations. We currently train beagles and beagle mixes to work in airports, and labs and lab mixes to work on borders, in cargo warehouses, and postal facilities. Occasionally we also recruit Jack Russell terriers to work in Guam finding brown tree snakes. When we locate a candidate for our program we do an extensive temperament test. We rate food drive and reaction to public places and crowds of people. The dogs are then evaluated by a veterinarian. They are tested for heartworm, blood is analyzed, and x-rays of the hips and spine are rated. Dogs are vaccinated and spayed or neutered.

Adopting a friend

The USDA, National Detector Dog Training Center offers Beagles, Beagle mixes and some large breed dogs for adoption. These are dogs that have not met our training requirements but would make wonderful pets. All adopted dogs are spayed or neutered and are current on vaccinations. Please call for an adoption application and to be placed on our waiting list, 770-254-2523. We may not have dogs currently available. We do not charge an adoption fee but if you adopt a dog from us you are responsible for the costs, if any, of getting the dog to you.

Come Visit Us!

We are not open to the public. Any visitation of one of our dogs up for adoption must be arranged in advance by invitation.
