SMOKEY
SMOKEY NEEDS A FOSTER HOME!!
Smokey is a very handsome, blue, 5-7 yr old neutered male Weim that is about 10-12 lbs overweight. This gentle boy has not had a good life until now as he was not on heartworm prevention, so unfortunately, he is Heartworm positive & will have to go through HW treatment - confined with no activity for 8 weeks.
Smokey is more calm than most Weims, rides nicely in the car, and does well with other dogs. He would make a great family dog or a single companion. More on Smokey as we get to know him.
If you would be interested in fostering Smokey through heartworm treatment, please complete a foster application on our website at www.AtlantaLovesWeims.org
Who We Are
The Atlanta Weimaraner Club Rescue (“AWCR”) is a group of Weimaraner enthusiasts and owners in the Atlanta area. The mission of the club is to provide Weimaraner owners with a place to meet folks that enjoy doing things with their Weimaraners. In addition to the social aspect of the club, the Atlanta Weimaraner Club provides for the rescue, care, and adoption of lost, surrendered and homeless Weimaraners. The AWCR assists in re-homing Weimaraners by providing foster homes. The funds for the rescue program are raised through various fundraising events and donations. The Club also provides public education on the breed and responsible dog ownership.
In establishing our non-profit organization, we are looking for dedicated Weimaraner owners. Our rescue program is run strictly on a volunteer basis. Please join this group of dedicated individuals who are the true heart of the organization by becoming a member and helping raise funds to rescue our gray (and blue) friends. We have a dynamic group that has come together to dedicate time and focus on rescuing dogs through friendship, fun and fellowship.
Adopting a friend
To meet some of our available dogs in person, come visit us at Petsmart Johns Creek in Suwanee on the first Saturday of every month, Petsmart at Perimeter Mall on the second Saturday of every month, or at Petsmart Cobb Pkwy in Acworth on the third Saturday of every month. In order to adopt, you must first complete an adoption application. Then we will conduct a phone interview, vet check and home check. The application is available on our website at www.AtlantaLovesWeims.org
About Adopting a Weimaraner
Adopting a Weim in Rescue
The Atlanta Weimaraner Club Rescue uses a common process in rescue program. You will find this to be the case with any reputable rescue organization. Potential homes are screened carefully to make sure they can provide an appropriate environment. We are glad to have phone conversations and communicate by email. We have a pre-adoption application, a vet check on current and prior animals, a home visit, and binding contract. All this would need to be done before placement.
All of our rescue dogs must be spayed or neutered. We do not place intact dogs. They must also be micro-chipped, with registration to be updated at time of adoption. Our dogs will be up to date with veterinary needs prior to adoption.
Patience is in order for most of our applicants. An appropriate Weim may or may not be available at this time. Sometimes we get a call for an owner-surrender or we may get a call from a shelter about an available dog. We encourage our owners who surrender to hold onto their dog if possible, while we find the right home for their dog. That is less traumatic for the dog. The dogs that come from shelters are usually fostered for a period of time, for assessment, and for necessary vetting to be done. We may not get a call for two or three weeks, then we may get two or three dogs in one week. It is unpredictable. If a specific age or gender is preferred, your wait might be longer.
We do not adopt dogs to families on a "first-come-first-serve" basis. We strive to make the best match possible between dog and adoptive family, and not every family is appropriate for every dog. Examples: Some dogs are fine with busy, small children, and others are not. Some dogs are fine with cats, others are not. Some dogs are fine with other dogs, some are not.
When we place a dog in its new adoptive home, there is a 4 week probation period for both the dog and the new family. If everything goes well, after the 4 week probation time we will finalize the adoption. Our adoption contract is thorough and binding. This contract states that at ANY TIME during the life of the dog, REGARDLESS OF REASON, if the new owner cannot keep the dog or take care of it, the dog MUST be returned to our rescue.
Generally our rescues do not have problems. More often the problems are with the owner, or the owner’s circumstances. We do sometimes have rescues that come to us with issues. Few issues are difficult, rarely are they insurmountable. Patience and knowledge is always in order. It is strongly recommended that if you do not already know the Weimaraner breed that you take the time to become educated. We can help you with that. It is also extremely important that you know the general needs and temperament of hunting breeds. The Weimaraner is NOT the breed for everyone!
Rescue is a time-consuming, costly venture. Our rescue program is run by volunteers. We do charge an adoption fee to cover expenses related to getting a dog ready for its new family. The adoption fee is stated on the application. We depend on adoption fees, donations, and fundraisers to keep our rescue program going.
The Weims in our rescue program will have a complete file at time of adoption, with medical records, microchip records, necessary contact information and a contract.
We in Weimaraner Rescue love to have updates and photos, we want to stay in touch with our dogs and their families. We are available to answer questions, offer advice when needed, and provide information. We have resources for many dog owner subjects, including nail trimming, obedience training, reputable veterinarians in our areas, and activities well suited for Weims and their families.
Always remember, getting a dog is a 10-15 year commitment!

Atlanta Weimaraner Club Rescue is a 501C3 Not-for-Profit Organization.
When a dog comes into Rescue, funds must be spent on neutering/spaying, vaccinations, (Rabies, DHLPP, Bordatella), screening for Heartworms, a fecal check and Microchipping. Vetting expenses on a healthy animal can run as high as $200. More than half of the dogs that come into our program are not healthy and we must provide the treatment the original owners either didn't choose to or could not afford. We pay to set broken bones, treat Heartworms, and all sorts of illnesses and injuries. In some cases, the sicker dogs that we receive can cost as much as $900 to treat. We do not turn dogs away because they are sick.
If you would like to make a tax deductible donation to help fund our cause, please click the PayPal button below. PayPal is fast, free, and secure. Your donation will go directly to help save a gray (or blue) dog in our rescue.
Remember, our Rescuers are unpaid volunteers with full time jobs, families, and their own personal dogs to care for, just like you. We do not have kennel facilities nor do we receive financial help from the government. The funds to care for rescued Weims comes strictly from fundraising events or private donations.
The gray (and blue) dogs thank you for your support and so do we, the Rescuers.
