Adopting A Friend

The Process

  • Click on the link at the upper right of this page to view our adoptable pets. Click on the pet's picture to see a description.
  •  Our shelter adoption/viewing hours are Monday - Friday 12 pm to 4:45 pm.
  • If you have other pets or small children, we suggest that you visit our shelter and play with the pet in our visiting room.  Because our pets are housed in a kennel situation with cleaning and sanitation protocols designed to prevent any spread of disease or parasites, we cannot guarantee that they are housebroken, good with other animals, or good with children.
  • Complete an adoption application.  Accuracy and completeness speed up the process.
  • We can fax or email adoption applications to those not visiting our shelter in person.  Our email address is coffeepets @yahoo.com.  Email is typically checked near close each business day.
  • Processing applications can take from a couple of days to two weeks.
  • Landlord policies for renters are verified.  Vet references on existing and/or recent pets are checked for rabies vaccinations and heartworm prevention on dogs.
  • For applicants inside Coffee County, we verify fences, pens, dog houses, etc. via drive by.
  • Good quality photographs of the area where the pet will live (to include fences, pens, etc.) are essential for applicants outside of Coffee County.  Please send digital photos to coffeepets@yahoo.com, or send hard copy photos to DCCHS 620 Iron Road, Douglas, GA 31534.
  • Rescue group applicants must include sufficient information to verify appropriate licensing.
  • While we welcome out-of-state adoptions, applicants should be aware that we cannot provide transportation.
  • An Adoption Committee comprised of volunteers reviews and makes decisions on applications.  Shelter employees do not approve or deny applications.
  • When a decision is reached, approved applicants are notified by telephone.  Others are notified by letter.
  • If a pet you've applied for no longer appears on our site, it has likely been adopted into its forever home.
  • Holds are placed on pets only after an application has been approved and the adoption fee has been paid.

Adoption Fees

  • Dogs $125
  • Cats $100
  • Fees must be paid in cash, cashiers check, or money order.
  • Payment must be made within 4 business days after approval notification.
  • Spay/neuter and rabies vaccinations are scheduled after payment is received.
  • Once spay/neuter and rabies vaccinations have been scheduled, we notify the adopter by phone and schedule a pick up day and time.
  • Fees not paid in person at the shelter should be sent 2nd day UPS to DCCHS, P. O. Box 1958, Douglas, GA 31534.
  • Dog fee covers spay/neuter, heartworm test and prevention for adult dogs, heartworm prevention for puppies, worming, and vaccinations.
  • Cat fee covers spay/neuter, feline leukemia test, worming, and vaccinations.  If the cat is positive for feline leukemia, the adopters is notified by phone to discuss options.

Other Adoption Considerations

  • We try to make the best possible match between our adoptable pets and their potential forever families.
  • We look for responsible pet owners.  Responsible pet owners spay and neuter their pets, have no more pets than they can appropriately care for, provide adequate vet care to include annual vet visits including rabies vaccinations and heartworm prevention for dogs, comply with landlords' pet policies, confine their pets to their own property unless on leash or crated, have ID on all pets, and keep pet cats inside where they will be safe and have a long life.

Who We Are

Our Mission Statement

To improve the lives of companion animals through sheltering homeless pets, providing spay/neuter services through our reduced cost program, and educating the public in responsible pet ownership

DCCHS is a nonprofit organization comprised primarily of volunteers.  DCCHS contracts with our city and county governments to provide sheltering services for municipal animal control and our community's citizens.  Our shelter is staffed by employees.

Each year our shelter takes in approximately 6.000 dogs and cats.  Please help us to reduce those numbers by spaying or neutering your pets and by having identification on your pet.

Come Visit Us

Our shelter is located at 620 Iron Road in Douglas, GA, next to the City of Douglas water treatment plant.  It is off highway 221 between highway 158 and highway 32.
