Who We Are

Cottonpatch Weimaraner Rescue began from the love of our first weimaraner Jed. He was dumped at a local fire hall and a caring volunteer fireman that knew I was looking for a weim called me. When I went to see him I was appalled. He was 42 pounds of skin and bones. He had no skin on his nose and his bottom front teeth were knocked out. He was a poor sight indeed. I loaded him up and took him home. After an initial vet visit and good checkup Jed became a member of our family for two years before being hit by a car. After two years of wondering if we were ready to share that kind of love with another weim we decided it had been long enough. We contacted Dick Wilbur of Grau Geist Kennels and asked if he had any weims we would be interested in. Of course his waiting list is long for a puppy and we weren't eager to experience the antics of raising a young weimaraner. He told us about a weim in PA who might be needing to be rehomed due to owner allergies. Enter: Grau Geist Cottonpatch Kid(Bubba). 7 years old and with more horror stories than you can shake a stick at. We flew him down Delta AirCargo and opened our hearts once again. The perfect dog who never once gave us a hint of the stories that accompanied him. Years pass and we were once again robbed of growing older with a wonderful companion. Devastated but determined we would not be without a weim again. 3 months pass and Enter: Daisy. A 5 month old whose owner passed away. A family friend who knew we dealt with the breed asked if we knew anyone who might want her. We jumped at the chance. Two months pass and my husband decides he wants a puppy because Daisy has clearly attached herself to me. So Enter:Nate. An 8 week old bundle of teeth and claws and all the humor you could ask for. Daisy took to raising Nate to be the dog she wanted him to be and my husband decides he wants a started gun dog to hunt behind and help train Nate. Enter: Cooper. 5 years old and a Senior Hunter from Mississippi. We had met Cooper some years earlier and when inquiring to his owner for suggested kennels to find an older gun dog he asked if we wanted Coop. Once agian we were blessed. Now we have three weims and are hearing a term quite often from our vet's office about these "rescues" we are getting. Rescues- what's that? We were educated that we had been doing this all along we just didn't know it had a name. So we researched what rescue was and signed up on a little known website called "Weimaraner Rescue Railroad". We started getting calls from all over Georgia wanting to surrender weimaraners. We told them that's not what we do but found all too often these people had been turned away from rescue clubs with no other option than taking their pet to the shelter. We just couldn't let this happen and started taking dogs that would otherwise be sent to the shelter. After a while we decided we needed to get serious and get a name for ourselves so we came up with Cottonpatch (in memory of Bubba) Weimaraner Rescue. We hope we can place our weims so that they can change peoples lives they way ours has been.
